They’ll just hire a better coach than they are losing

RE: UCF HC Heupel to Tennessee
By no means is this much coaching turnover a good thing, but let me just say, Heupel was just an ok coach. He wasn’t nearly the guy his processors were. As a conference rival, I just wasn’t worried about him at UCF like some others. The loss is big in the short term for continuity sake, but long term, another guy will likely do better there.

Still tough though, sorry knights.

UCF HC Heupel to Tennessee
It was reported in Nashville yesterday that the Clemson OC was reaching out to a possible staff....it seems they didn’t want the UT dumpster fire.....nor did about 5-6 other coaches including Dykes or Fickell. Hence, they got Heupal.

UCF has a lot of built in advantages that other G5 schools don't have. UCF is one of the easier jobs to advance a coaches career. Its no doubt about it that UCF will hire a better coach than its losing. This time I hope UCF can get an established coach like Gus Malzahn to come and stay 5-7 years !! I think Malzahn can do what George O'leary did for the program !! (O'leary put the program on the map. Malzahn can take UCF to the college playoffs) I'm excited !!

Understand all's fair but still seems crummy of White to raid UCF. You'll do better than Heupel IMO. We've done pretty well with Fuente, Norvell & Silverfield (so far). Can't imagine Heupel winning at UTK, too much crap & too much work to even be 3rd best in the SEC East. And Heupel seems to be more of a maintainer than a builder. You'll do better. Need to make the right AD choice.

If it is any consolation to UCF fans, only a handful of programs have the means and accomplishments to retain coaches. Powerful P-5 schools, for example, routinely poach coaches from their lesser brethren.

Are you nuts? Hiring retreads does not have a good track record in this conference, Tubberville, Strong, Holgerson (TBD, but not looking good), etc.

Congrats UCF. No, I mean it.

I said multiple times on here I thought he had ya'll going in the wrong direction and that he was HIGHLY overrated, something that was not a popular opinion but I'm standing by it. Another year with him was going to be another year of mediocrity at best.

He's stepping into a shtshow of a program right now, and meanwhile there's going to be a bunch of qualified candidates begging for the job, so good luck on the search, I'm sure ya'll are gonna be great.

You think they would have learned from the Butch Jones experience. You don't hire the guy who came after THE GUY.

And yet, he was probably their best coach since Fulmer.

RE: UCF HC Heupel to Tennessee
As a USF fan, I'm actually of mixed emotion here. I agree with many of the UCF fans that Heupel wasn't a great coach. Although not as bad as Strong, it was clear that he'd gotten the most out of Frost's players but had increasingly diminishing returns with his own.

Strong's 3 years at USF:

10-2
7-6
4-8 (and a completely depleted cupboard)

Heupel's 3 years at UCF:

12-1
10-3
6-4

His 2020 recruiting class ranked 7th in the AAC per 247, but what's striking is seeing where those recruits were from:

Georgia
Germany
California
Arizona
Kansas
Arkansas
New York
Virginia

2021 moved up to 4th in the AAC, but again with recruits from:

Arizona
Arkansas
Texas
Georgia (x 3)
North Carolina (x 2)
Germany
California (x2)
Virginia
Kentucky
New York
Mississippi

Only 4 recruits from the state of Florida! So I think Heupel was doing a helluva job of alienating Florida high school coaches, and as a USF fan you can bet I was stoked about the long term ramifications of that. This move is going to give a new coaching staff a chance to mend some fences.

All that I can hope is that it takes a while, and that some of the turnover/turmoil brings them tumbling down.

Charge down, MFers!
