At the press conference today, the ASUN commissioner addressed this point, but in a nutshell, the ASUN will allow each school to follow its own path as to what level of football they play at. There will be no pressure from the conference for any school to pursue a particular division.
-------
In other words, the ASUN will not be moving to FBS (my opinion) as a conference.
They want the ASUN to be the "best" FCS conference in the nation, according to Ted (what Ted said). Stetson is ok for non-scholarship football, Liberty is free to pursue its own was as an FBS independent, all schools in the ASUN are free to pursue a football path of their own liking.
Much appreciated.

I can promise you, Liberty would not give up Independent to play in an ASUN FBS conference.

I can’t help but think that there is some sort of FBS aspirations for at least a few of the ASUN football schools-Jacksonville St, EKU, and Kennesaw St all seem like they types that want something more.
I’m also a little surprised that expansion seems to have stalled out. The SoCon and the rest of the OVC aren’t nibbling.

A couple weeks ago @ASUNcommish started following the "Unofficial Northwestern State's Fan Twitter." Wonder if there is any Louisiana SLC teams looking ASUN's way. McNeese would be a great add to get the Football strength up.

I believe at some point he (Gumbart) had said the ASUN did not want to be responsible for another conference dropping below the minimum number of teams. Any other defections from the Southland would do that, and seemingly doom them as a conference unless they were able to instantly bring up some D2 schools.
Of course, if it’s the SLC member coming to the ASUN and begging for a spot, is it morally wrong for the ASUN to take them?
Southeastern Louisiana, and I believe maybe Nicholls as well, played with both UNA and Jacksonville State in the original iteration of the D2 Gulf South Conference. Throw in their relationship with Central Arkansas, and I wouldn’t be surprised for both to be at least casually interested. But was UCA running away from the Southland itself, or is there bad blood between them and some of the Louisiana schools? Would they be ok with taking on one (or more)? Would the state of Louisiana even allow 1 or 2 to go and leave the others out in the cold? And would the ASUN even want to take on schools that at least have the perception of being the reason five schools left the Southland?

I believe the Louisiana schools finances are hindered by the state in someway keeping them from committing to growth. And the asun seems to be insistent on growing the best football conference. But who knows what the truth is.

Does that ASUN champ come with a chance for the NY6? Because if it does Liberty would be at the podium talking about how that is the perfect spot for them. Especially considering they can't pay anyone to let them have that chance at the moment.

That's the kicker for Liberty at the moment. They're bringing back more production than almost any other G5 plus they have a schedule they could win out on. If they're the highest rated G5 they have zero access to the G5 NY6 bowl. None. That's the reason Freeze said during an interview that Liberty would be interested in a conference.

Not automatically, no. The "Group of Five" is not "whichever FBS conferences are not 'Football Autonomy' conferences", so 10-5=5 (and presumably 11 minus 5 would equal 6) ...
... they are the five conferences that negotiated as a group during the last College Football Playoff contract negotiations, and they are therefore signatories to that contract, agreeing to splitting up a single basic CFP "share" and getting the one NY6 Access Bowl spot for the best ranked of their five champions.
So getting into the Access Bowl race while the current CFP contract is in force is speculation about how likely a non-signatory would be able to convince all of the parties to the contract to agree to add them in.

The P5 would not object to another conference as long as the G6 agreed to all share the existing payout that now goes to the G5. Of course, that stipulation would mean that the G5 would not agree to add a new conference to the CFP contract, so the chances of an ASUN getting access to an NY6 berth are virtually zero.
