MBB @UAB - Friday game
UAB/CUSAtv video is up ... without sound
... so I'm adding the Rice/JP audio. (Hope it's somewhat in sync with the video feed.)
It's 10 seconds ahead of the video ... which is OK.
CUSAtv audio appears at ~17:00.
UAB misses all their shots for the first 2:30 ... but Owls get only one Fiedler layup. In another minute, it's 9-2, UAB. Grrr.

RE: MBB @UAB - Friday game
Owls perking up ... sweet Mullins drive makes it 15-9 and Rice grabs a defensive rebound @11:29. Timeout.

RE: MBB @UAB - Friday game
Owls down 9, 35-26, at the half. That will happen when you shoot under 35% and 23% from 3 pt range.

Stats are almost identical save for the TO differential-- Rice has 10 turnovers vs. only 4 for UAB, and they turned them into 8 points. (We have no points off TOs.)

Olivari with two breakaway, sprint-to-the-line 3s. Wow!

After Rice takes the lead (finishing off a 12-0 run), UAB on a 9-0 run. 47 - 53 at 12:11.

They're starting to kill us in the paint, and going there each time up the court.
53 - 62 UAB at 8:04. Olivari is trying to keep us in the game, but we suddenly have no defense.

UAB now with 30 points in the paint, including their last 10. Defense has disappeared. 56 - 68 at 6:54.

78-68 final. Owls played UAb essentially even in 2H. Need a better start on Saturday.

Again, the stats across-the-board were effectively even, save for turnovers in which UAB had 10 less then us, and 14 more points off turnovers than us. That was the difference. Really the only difference. Our defense the last 10 minutes of the game fell apart. UAB was driving on us with ease into the paint for easy layups time and time again.

Wasn't able to watch but good to see Poteat get in the boxscore. Was his production mostly in garbage time?

No, he spelled players through the entire game. BTW, there really wasn't any garbage time. The game was in doubt until the final couple minutes.

Good to hear. It doesn't sound like his presence inside helped on defense in this one (if I'm reading the thread correctly), but getting a second playable big man is pretty important. It'd allow Abercrombie to play in a natural position all game rather than having him take spells at the 5.
Evee's absence is way bigger than just missing a second scorer. His presence (and Olivari's), even when missing shots, essentially creates our entire spacing. Much easier to prep for us knowing you can sag off everybody except Olivari and Abercrombie. A real shame that he missed out on these games. I think this weekend would have really told us where we are as a team.

I'm not a savvy basketball analyst, but Poteat appeared to me to be very active and useful. He scored 10 points (4-5 FGs, none from 3; 2-3 FTs) in ~15 minutes, so you could say he was the most-productive Owl today, on a points-per-minute basis. He had 4 rebounds, including two of our seven offensive boards. His one assist was lovely: A pass to Sheffield cutting to the basket along the baseline; Sheff scored on an acrobatic reverse layup.
Abercrombie (0 points -- 0-4 3-pointers -- in ~26 minutes) was disappointing. He looked slow and indecisive. His 3 turnovers were second only to Fiedler's four. Abercrombie, Poteat and Payton Moore each blocked a single shot.

Passing is the one thing that's stuck out to me in every game that Poteat has played in. Even when he was playing just a minute or two a game, there always seemed to be at least one really good dish.
Hopefully as Poteat gets more minutes, he becomes more resolute in the paint. Too many teams feel like they can just ram it down our throat.

Splitting the series this today would be a tremendous accomplishment for the team, especially without Evee.
