The talk of ending the life of Captain Cane is just too bad. I feel there is a place for him and know the kids love him. I think to wear the suit you have to captivate the audience. And maybe this last Capt. failed to do that. What makes a good mascot, anyway?? Besides the cleverness of the design of a costume it is the person within the suit that brings it to life. Anyone can put the suit on and walk around. The art is bringing to life a historic icon that is embroidered on so much of the sports program memorabilia of any university. The person chosen for the honor should have to uphold a certain standard of antics and behaviors that were established by their predecessors before them. Incorporating what they brought forth through the mascot and adlibing with their own ideas that work. If the one chosen does not gain exceptance by his audience then yank him out, tar and feather him, and put some one else in it that can do the job with passion.
Its not the San Diego Chickens' costume that makes the bird fly.....Its the person within!

I'm not a big fan of the current captain cane, but I can guarantee that if he was more active he'd be a lot better. Whoever it has been for the past 5-6 years has stunk it up. I can never tell if it is a woman or a jolly little man in there.

I dont remember how many events Captain Cane as to do a year but its somewhere in the 100 count or more, after you add the time up what he is making is probably around 5 cents a hour, the guy loved being Captain Cane so before you bash somebody realize how much work he did for very little pay, and I hear they are screwing him out of being able to go to the bowl game. Booo TU for that.

I wasn't meaning to bash. If it wasn't a school topic now I wouldn't have touched it. I was giving my opinion to what may be the case and offering a perspective. I don't know how the University chooses who to be their Mascot. Is there a Mascot tryout????
Not sure why the university is not allowing him to go. I've read where band members were not going also. Maybe the school would like to use the bowl money on other things (Like Skelly Stadium) than traveling too much excess.

First, I think any one who attempts to be Capt Cane deserves a round of applause. 04-bow As has been mentioned it isn't an easy job and at best, you're probably going to have 50% of the people who aren't too happy with you. If he/she is too juvenile, most of those very grown up college students won't like you, plus some of the adults. If you're too grown up, mean to the other team, make fun of the other team, the students and some adults may like you but the kids and their parents might be offended. It's almost a no win situation. I'm sure there are set routines they do but the only thing to make each CC different from the others is their improvisational ability and some people are just faster on their feet than others. I'll give anyone attempting this job the benefit of the doubt and not make too many good or bad judgements!! By the way, I won't miss any game in the area if the "Chicken" is going to be there----He's great!!!!!

Nah, not me in the suit. I might punch him/it in the gut if it got too close though!

Why couldn't the deal ol Cap'n be mean to the other team/mascot/fans/players, nice to our kiddies, chug a beer with the student section, and make everyone happy? I don't think hte mentality of a good mascot would take too much to figure out.
