Soaring Eagle Wrote:Alright, I want to try Linux but keep my windows system. What do I need to do?
I went to http://www.mandrakelinux.com and looked around. Got to their download area on the ftp site. Do I just download everything there and put it on a CD to install. How do I create a dual install system. Can I do in on a r/w CD?
Thanks.
Alright... download the three ISO CD's. Use something like Nero to burn them in
ISO format (not data format) onto a CD disc. I recommend the raven.cslab.vt.edu mirror, because Virginia Tech put serious bandwith behind it.
You must use something like Partition Magic to partition your hard drive. The utility that comes with Mandrake Linux to partition works fine, but Windows can actually re-claim the partition on its own accord unless it is specially partitioned through a DOS prompt, because Windows was made anal retentive like that. I will send you a PM regarding partitioning software that's free and user friendly.
Make your Linux partition roughly 5 to 6 GB, unless you're big on downloading massive files ... formatted in ext2.
Create a 250 MB Linux Swap partition.
Mandrake will automatically install a boot loader for you, configure all your hardware, and ask you what software you'd like to install. It'll explain what all you'd install if you selected the networking package etc etc. I recommend, however, the KDE GUI. It's very stable and user friendly.
If you want to be able to manipulate files on your windows partition (delete? rename? move to and from Linux?) then make sure your Windows install is using a FAT32 or similar file system. NTFS is not yet supported on Linux or any other OS for that matter. Linux is still in alpha development with NTFS, and problems can happen trying to use NTFS on Linux.
If you to actually run Windows programs while in Linux... lemme know and we'll talk about that too. It's actually funny sometimes... you can run Windows programs on Linux FASTER than you can run them on Windows!
When you get into Mandrake Linux, you'll be able to alter almost everything from the "Mandrake Control Center" --> very powerful and easy to use utility. When you get things up and running, let me know and I can suggest to you additional software packages you can install in MDK Control Center. The three CD's you're downloading contain thousands of free software titles, including GAIM... which is AIM, ICQ, MSN, Y!, IRC, Napster, and more all in one :)
