BTW.. your inclusion of only the Top 10 is misleading.

Upon looking at the Top 50...

Linux - 16
FreeBSD - 10
Windows 2000 - 10
Solaris 8 - 7
Windows Server 2003 - 2
Solaris - 2
NetBSD/OpenBSD - 1
NT4/Windows 98 - 1
HP-UX - 1

Looks like Linux can tackle servers as well as a user friendly desktop.

Where are those "equivalent" apps again? Don't you have to have "equivelent" desktop apps in order to be desktop friendly?

Linux is a decent server OS, but I don't see anyones grandma using a desktop version anytime soon.

But there are plenty of grandma's, sisters, fathers, moms using a rather snappy version of BSD though.

My daughter started using Unix when she was 2 years old... that Unix was Mac OS X. 03-razz

Alright, I want to try Linux but keep my windows system. What do I need to do?

I went to <a href='http://www.mandrakelinux.com' target='_blank'>http://www.mandrakelinux.com</a> and looked around. Got to their download area on the ftp site. Do I just download everything there and put it on a CD to install. How do I create a dual install system. Can I do in on a r/w CD?

Thanks.

Alright... download the three ISO CD's. Use something like Nero to burn them in ISO format (not data format) onto a CD disc. I recommend the raven.cslab.vt.edu mirror, because Virginia Tech put serious bandwith behind it.

You must use something like Partition Magic to partition your hard drive. The utility that comes with Mandrake Linux to partition works fine, but Windows can actually re-claim the partition on its own accord unless it is specially partitioned through a DOS prompt, because Windows was made anal retentive like that. I will send you a PM regarding partitioning software that's free and user friendly.
Make your Linux partition roughly 5 to 6 GB, unless you're big on downloading massive files ... formatted in ext2.
Create a 250 MB Linux Swap partition.

Mandrake will automatically install a boot loader for you, configure all your hardware, and ask you what software you'd like to install. It'll explain what all you'd install if you selected the networking package etc etc. I recommend, however, the KDE GUI. It's very stable and user friendly.

If you want to be able to manipulate files on your windows partition (delete? rename? move to and from Linux?) then make sure your Windows install is using a FAT32 or similar file system. NTFS is not yet supported on Linux or any other OS for that matter. Linux is still in alpha development with NTFS, and problems can happen trying to use NTFS on Linux.

If you to actually run Windows programs while in Linux... lemme know and we'll talk about that too. It's actually funny sometimes... you can run Windows programs on Linux FASTER than you can run them on Windows!

When you get into Mandrake Linux, you'll be able to alter almost everything from the "Mandrake Control Center" --> very powerful and easy to use utility. When you get things up and running, let me know and I can suggest to you additional software packages you can install in MDK Control Center. The three CD's you're downloading contain thousands of free software titles, including GAIM... which is AIM, ICQ, MSN, Y!, IRC, Napster, and more all in one :)

Mandrake Linux a couple thousand times easier than any version of BSD. Good luck to those masochistic grandma's you refer to.

Equivalent Software: (I'll edit this post and I find them)

Photoshop? --> GIMP, which now offers 3rd party CMYK support.
Illustrator? --> OpenOffice offers full pdf save support, and can quite easily accept graphics from any Linux graphics program, including GIMP
Freehand? --> WTF is this? Best I gather it's print/graphics editor. See Illustrator and Photoshop equivalents in that case.
Final Cut Pro? --> Cinelerra.
Logic? --> Found a few dozen softwares named Logic -- gotta be more specific.

So let's review, shall we? Photoshop, Illustrator, Freehand, and Final Cut Pro. Those run over $1,000 easy. Linux equivalents? $0.00

DAMN I love open source.

Furthermore...

Your "point" on processor cost and DVD drive was laughable.

Pioneer All-In-One DVD/CD burner
3.5" floppy
120 GB WD 7500 RPM HD
P4 2.80 Ghz with 800 Mhz FSB overclocked to 3.361 Ghz / 971 Mhz FSB.
1024 MB CORSAIR PC3200 DDR Hyper-Performance RAM
Asus P4P800 in turbo and latency optimization mode... unlocks backdoor in the PE chipset for additional speed
3COM Gigabyte Lan
USB Bay
Front box LCD temp display
Front box USB / audio ports
350 Watt power supply
Zalman CNPS700-Cu 100% copper "fanned" heatsink for overclocking
Neon case light
Neon side side
Case mod: plexiglass side window
2 rear case fans
Front grill exhaust
ViewSonic 19" CRT monitor

It's fully loaded. It's STILL pushing HALF the cost of a bare bones G5. Oh yea, even with the 32 bit processor....
IT'S STILL FASTER than a dual 64-bit G5.

I paid $1,600 for somebody to build all that and ship it to me with a 3 yr warranty and lifetime tech support. You'd pay $3,000 + shipping for a bottom feeding G5 that is slower, has much more expensive hardware, and nowhere near the software or vercitility of a PC.

So let's review:

G5 ... cost twice as much.. can't do as much.. more expensive to maintain... poor Apple support.
PC ... cost half as much.... does ALOT more... cheap to maintain... 3 yrs on site service free, lifetime suppport free.

Wrong on all counts...

Illustrator is OpenOffice? WHAT?

Gimp is gimpy and isn't even on par with Photoshop.

Illustrator and FreeHand are both vector illlustration apps. Not word processors that can export PDF

Illustrator
<a href='http://www.adobe.com/products/illustrator/overview.html' target='_blank'>http://www.adobe.com/products/illustrator/...r/overview.html</a>

FreeHand
<a href='http://www.macromedia.com/software/freehand/productinfo/features/' target='_blank'>http://www.macromedia.com/software/freehan...tinfo/features/</a>

Logic
<a href='http://www.apple.com/software/pro/logic/' target='_blank'>http://www.apple.com/software/pro/logic/</a>

Final Cut
<a href='http://www.apple.com/finalcutpro/' target='_blank'>http://www.apple.com/finalcutpro/</a>

Oh and here are some others you can't get on Linux

Director
<a href='http://www.macromedia.com/software/director/?promoid=home_prod_dir_082403' target='_blank'>http://www.macromedia.com/software/directo...prod_dir_082403</a>

Quark
<a href='http://www.quark.com/products/xpress/' target='_blank'>http://www.quark.com/products/xpress/</a>

Ever heard of the saying "you get what you pay for"? 03-wink

:stupid:

Ok, GTS. This post destroyed your credibility. You really need to know about the software when bragging about their open source equivalents. This, of course, clouds all the facts and figures you have been posting in this thread. It clouds them because I can't be sure you actually know what you are talking about. 03-razz 03-nutkick

Now, can we end this nonsense? Can this thread be killed or can it at least be moved from the SPORTS board? I'm sure any one of the numerous admins and moderators that have been keeping this thread alive could move it to somewhere in the Lounge area. :bang:  :chair:  05-nono  03-puke

Wine has successfully emulated nearly all those programs.

Also, I'm going by what descriptions I could find. Some of the crap you put up has multiple title results, and I had trouble getting good descriptions at the software database I use.

Hey, I don't care to pay for software or hardware. :snore:
On the contrary. As a Macintosh user you prefer to pay an outrageous amount for inferior hardware and software.

I, on the other hand, like to pony up for hardware, and actively use and contribute to open source. I suppose you don't grasp the concept of using and contributing to open source, because you can't pay $250 dollars for it to come in a gray box with a silver apple on it.

This is an interesting thread...

In the server world however, UNIX/Linux is king, Windows wishes it could manage more then a week of uptime, and Mac is used by the PR department to develop marketing campaigns.

We rebooted 2 windows servers today. This is a common occurence for anyone that relies on Windows for its server infrastructure. When I first started my job, I found out that we reboot the host (UNIX) weekly. I asked the obvious question, "Why?!". They said it helps clear out the gremlins (huh?).

Mac OS X is UNIX.

My Mac laptop generally has 30 days of uptime between reboots.
