NCAA Reclassification Warning Letter
If a school fails to meet FBS criteria they get a sternly written letter from the NCAA telling them they are out of compliance and fail to meet all FBS criteria in any of the next 10 seasons they will be reclassified FCS with no waivers permitted.

If B1G plays their full league slate half the league will fail to meet FBS scheduling requirements of 5 countable home games.

Maybe that's why the whole 10-game schedule thing was thrown around.

If that was true, I feel like NIU and several others would've dropped out based purely on attendance

Something tells me we will see something very soon saying that 2020 won't have any bearing on FBS/D1 criteria for schools.

Oh that's what the Division I Manual says.
As for attendance, the definition is such that it's easily dealt with. That attendance report you see on the NCAA website is just pulled from box scores and can range from fairly accurate to as real as using transporters to travel from a starship to a planet.

You want to know the official attendance you have to FOI the report the school is required to send in February.

I believe 5 home games was put in to prevent a Cal St Fullerton situation of only playing 2 to 3 games a year at home like they did up until 1995.

Kept their program afloat longer than what it should have.

Fullerton had been gone decades by time it was adopted, Pacific on the other hand.....

Has the NCAA made a decision on Wright State now that they will be down to 11 sports?

Many D2 schools meet the criteria more than some of the D1 schools on the number of sports.

Both Fullerton and Pacific still played at least four home games a season, Pacific played at least five home games in all but two seasons, as listed here:

Seems like a classless move by the NCAA.

It would be shocking if the NCAA did that this season.

Though this is all just hypothetical regarding this season, so it's not actually a "move" by the NCAA, classless or otherwise.

The Western division schools that have four home conference games this year can have five either by playing the home side of a P5 home and away or with a buy game, but then hosting one buy game and cancelling the others makes the force majeur claim on the cancelled ones a bit weaker.

Also it's likely the Big Ten media partners told them that filling in their schedules with P5 schools would make the 10 game schedule closer to the full media value of the Big10 inventory than filling them in with a buy game.

Even if they went to the stripped down division round robin and CCG, which would definitely throw them out of compliance, if they just did that for one year a sternly worded letter is the worse that would happen.
