RE: Big Ten to Conference-Only Schedule
Listening to national radio shows it appears more ADs are pessimistic that a season will be played. Personally i dont think there will be one at all. Really sucks but the reality is it is so contagious and the season is around peak for flu and virus transmission. Just dont think we have sports until a certified FDA treatment protocol is in place.

Toledo will likely just schedule to play Michigan State some time a few years down the road. They will get no money this year but maybe a bigger payday when the game is actually played.

(07-09-2020 05:11 PM)epasnoopy Wrote:  The reasoning regarding travel seems kind of dumb. The Big Ten buys most of their home games in non-conference so their teams don't have to travel. NIU is only a 2.5 hour drive from Iowa.

The fact that they are dumping all nonconference games, even ones with nearby opponents, suggests that the stated reason is not the real reason.

The real reason may be that this gives the Big Ten another month to figure out whether it will be safe to play football at all without having to pay out these guarantees for games in stadiums that, at best, will not be anywhere near capacity.

I'd be surprised if there is any type of college football season this fall. We might want to see it, but it's time to start preparing for no college football this year......it's almost a certainty.

If that's the case, winter sports will also be cancelled this year. So, an entire year with no sports...if we are to expect things getting back to normal by spring.

California Community Colleges are moving all sports, including FB, to spring. Their association put out an announcement.

RE: Big Ten to Conference-Only Schedule
It’s looking like the ACC and the PAC-12 will follow suit. Any MAC teams affected by that?

MAC will be, we had a game at Pitt. Which we had a decent shot of winning imo, or at least a lot better than the likes of OSU and Notre Dame.

This is 100% my speculation:

Some P5 conferences don't want to pay out 1M+ guarantees to schools from G5 conferences knowing that they might only be able to seat say 25% of their stadium's capacity.

Example:

School X (e.g., Missouri) plays EMU before a crowd of 15K. Maybe 3K students and 12K paying.

If the average ticket for the 12K is $75 and the guarantee is 1M, Missouri lost money on the game.

Missouri has little to gain by playing the game unless the opponent accepts a reduced payout.

BTW, 6 weeks ago we thought we knew how the pandemic was playing out:

NYC area was 'healing' while the rest of the country remained at a manageable risk level.

Now, community spread is turning this into one gigantic mess. No one would hazard a guess what will happen in the next 4 weeks.

WMU won't be hosting Syracuse.

One ACC by-product: If Notre Dame joins a full 'ACC only' conference slate, our game with them is likely off. If not, our ND game may be salvaged.

But this feels like the opening chapter to what will eventually be a whole season cancellation, much like March redux with the hoops tourneys.

Man, if y'all thought that you were restricting yourself too much to US news sources. I was telling y'all that the way that several states were refusing to take serious action, they were going to see an increase in cases ... and now here we are. Florida, Texas, Alabama, all heading toward overwhelming their ICU's well before it's time for fall semester to start.

It's not like "Governor ends lockdown while new case per day rate is still close to its peak" and "epidemic takes off again" should be a surprising sequence of stories.

RE: Big Ten to Conference-Only Schedule
With two or three of the five power conferences abandoning nonconference games, wouldn't it make sense for the MAC to do the same at this point? This would give the conference another month to decide whether or not it is safe to play football this fall.

I don't expect football this fall at this point. But I can understand why the MAC might want more time before making that call.

Might as well, even if they’re permitted fans the stands will look like the crowds you see on ESPN3 MACtion where every family has their own section.

I would hate to lose two great nonleague home games for Miami which are still on at this point, UC and Army.

Every conference should just go to conference games only. Then, everyone can just push non-conf games back 1 year. Move 2020 non-conf games to '21; '21 to '22; etc.
