Trouble in Stillwater
NOTE: Please don't make this a political thread, debating the merits of OAN - this is to inform of the issues of a Top Cowboy RB with the coach.

OSU football: Chuba Hubbard says he won't participate in activities due to Mike Gundy's OAN shirt

Oklahoma State star running back Chuba Hubbard said he will no longer participate in Cowboys activities due to a photo of head coach Mike Gundy wearing a T-shirt of a far-right TV channel.

Gundy was photographed recently on a fishing trip with his two sons while wearing a One America News Network, rated by Media Bias/Fact Check as far-right, pro-Trump cable news network founded in 2013 and known to push conspiracy theories.

“I will not stand for this.. This is completely insensitive to everything going on in society, and it’s unacceptable. I will not be doing anything with Oklahoma State until things CHANGE,” Hubbard tweeted over the photo of Gundy.

Fellow Canadian and star linebacker Amen Ogbongbemiga also quote tweeted Hubbard and stood beside his roommate.

Along with his comments on COVID-19, basically treating the players as expendable cogs, Gundy may be Gonzo

OSU will sign a deal with OAN, making it their Longhorn Network.

RE: Trouble in Stillwater
Unfortunately I see OSU firing Gundy (undeservedly) due to public perception that could affect recruiting if they don't.

Yes it is the cancel culture.….

but I think this is more akin to a person who knows 4 weeks in advance they're having a drug test, and still tested positive for PED's. Deserve to get punished for stupidity.

Anyone wearing an OAN shirt right now in this climate- knows what that means politically.

Gundy has met with some players, and recorded this short video with Chuba.

He's staying for now. He's going to have a hard time recruiting in the future, though.

Yup.

Had it been worn a month ago, doubt anyone would have noticed

RE: Trouble in Stillwater
Society has lost its f'ing mind.

#1 Oklahoma is the redist of all red states and frankly it's not close. If your a liberal Democrat (or Canadian in this case) and are uncomfortable being around a majority of viewpoints that differ then your own then don't go to OSU. Same could be said for BYU, CAL Berkeley, Liberty, etc.

#2 I know nothing about OAN and don't care. After searching for all 2 minutes it looks like the conservative version of MSNBC to me so that begs the question. Would Gundy be in trouble for wearing a MSNBC shirt?

RE: Trouble in Stillwater
Earlier in the pandemic, he was pushing to bring OSU's players in on May 1, before any reopening procedures were discussed. He mentioned that they needed to do so "in order to bring money into the state of Oklahoma".

He has spent most of his coaching career battling with administration (and late megadonor T. Boone Pickens) over various things. He's come close to leaving several times. I'm not sure if he cares if he coaches much longer, as long as he gets paid.

My son couldn't believe it when I told him that weird dude with the mullet is OSU's all-time leading passer.

We’ve reached the point where merely disagreeing with the Left means the end of your career

That’s not how a healthy and free society works

RE: Trouble in Stillwater
This goes beyond "the left" and "the right." If 1. One America Network strongly advocates the conspiracy theory that former president B. Obama was not born in America and if 2. Mike Gundy believes that ... he will struggle to land young African-American athletes. (Full disclosure: I know nothing about OAN other than what I read today.)

It's fine to be a conservative. I have some conservative views. But when you buy into hard-core conspiracy theories that are either extremely leftist (for example, Cheney and Bush conspired to have the WTCenter towers bombed) or hard right (Hilary running a child porn sex ring from a pizza joint), you likely are not going to be very accommodating to somebody of a culture and political view that is unlike your own.

If, hypothetically, Mike Gundy believes lots of right-wing conspiracy theories (some of which are anti-black, anti-immigrant, etc.) and he owns a carpet cleaning business in Stillwater. Well, he's probably fine. He can hire a lot of white folks and work at homes of whites.

But if Mike Gundy believes lots of right-wing conspiracy theories that are anti-black (and I don't know that he does) and he wants to have blacks on his coaching staff and team ... he's likely in the wrong business.

If he doesn’t want to play for the coach he agreed to play for send him an invoice for all the tuition, room, board, and other benefits he’s sucked from the university and send him packing.

RE: Trouble in Stillwater
The video in the tweet is good damage control. Gundy admits that he has things to learn from his players, and Chuba admits he should have gone straight to his coach instead of the public.

I agree with the Berry Tramel column Bill posted above. Gundy is more careless than anything. It's not the first time he's dared OSU to get rid of him. The culture of OSU is conservative, but these are different days. A coach is going to need to recruit players.

If OSU offers him the right amount of money to go away, he's gone.

It's unfortunate that he isn't allowed to express his First Amendment rights. Also unfortunate that Hubbard and Gundy's recruiting pool are such racists.
