Merely monitoring them like UH did (and Rice plans to do) just seems to be a recipe for disaster. Especially when you're talking about a county and state whose case numbers are on the rise.

I’m confused. The Roost says returning Owl student athletes were to be tested on June 11th, with workouts not starting until the 17th, I assume after the results of those tests are in. Seems contrary to your post. Or am I missing something?

Rice's plan. It says screening and not testing. I think athletes only get tested if they have a temperature above 100.2 (which is on par with CDC guidelines).

Rice's plan. It says screening and not testing. I think athletes only get tested if they have a temperature above 100.2 (which is on par with CDC guidelines).

And Matthew Bartlett at The Roost says he has confirmed Rice is testing/has tested everyone.

“ Rice football soccer, volleyball and men's and women's cross country teams have a plan to return to campus. The Roost has confirmed those athletes will be tested as part of pre-participation COVID-19 screening on Thursday, June 11. Voluntary workouts are scheduled to begin on June 17.”

...testing as a part of screening...

That's good to hear. I agree with that policy as it's really going to be helpful to see where the schools are likely to be in August. Possibly Rice will also test all of its 4000-plus students in August, but most larger state schools aren't going to be able to test 40K students all at once due to the logistics. Using student-athletes as a test run so to speak for now should give the schools a good heads up to what they might be facing later.

RE: Impact of COVID-19 on NCAA sports programs
Just reading up on yesterday's press conference in Texas (where the governor is moving the state to 75 percent capacity in some of the activities - for better or worse since cases are still rising in Texas - although the death totals aren't climbing but staying steady at about 25-30 a day on average).

But as far as athletics go, Abbott did note to 24/7 sports that he thinks Texas stadiums should stay at 50 percent capacity at the most in the fall. That's an interesting admission by him that he realizes sporting events in Texas aren't ready to be completely normal quite yet. 50 percent capacity for most Rice sporting events isn't a big deal, although it would limit the Rice-LSU attendance most likely.

Quote:The Texas athletic department announced Thursday that 13 new football players have tested positive or are presumed positive for COVID-19, while 10 more are asymptomatic and in self-quarantine.

This is on top of the two positive cases that Texas reported last week, bring the number to 15 total Longhorns that have been diagnosed with the coronavirus.

I can only imagine when the colleges start bringing tens of thousands of students back to campus in about 8 weeks what the numbers are going to look like. No matter the view of the risk of the virus, I cannot see any administrator running that risk on their watch. My heavy prediction remains that on campus college and full (if any) college football schedules are highly unlikely this year.

I get the sense that most larger schools will offer a hybrid online/in-person experience. And to be honest, the in-person options may only be there so they can justify playing football still. I doubt very seriously if any football games play to a higher than 50 percent capacity - and even that might be stretching it.

Fans for indoor sports may not happen at all.

Is this one of those rare situations when being small is an advantage?

Small and small fan base. Rice Owls - social distancing before it was a thing.

Social distancing for over a century.

Clemson announced 28 new positive cases among its athletes and staff - at least 23 of those are football players.

Their announcement had a matter-of-fact tone, noting than none of the cases required hospitalization:

Quote:Thus far in the month of June, Clemson Athletics student-athletes and staff have completed 315 tests for COVID-19 with a total of 28 positive results.

Clemson has notified and isolated each of those individuals who tested positive for a period of at least 10 days. Close known contacts have also been asked to self-quarantine for at least 14 days. Most of the total cases have been asymptomatic, and none have required hospitalization. As community transmission continues throughout the area, it is advised that individuals monitor for symptoms.

As the State of South Carolina and the Upstate continue to experience community transmission of COVID-19, individuals are advised to continue to practice non-pharmaceutical interventions, including face coverings and social distancing.

More information about steps individuals should take if they test positive or have known exposure is available on the University’s website at http://www.clemson.edu/coronavirus, and detailed instructions on notification procedures will continue to be updated on that site.

Rice started up on the 17th. Did we have any players test positive?

None that have been announced on Twitter, riceowls.com or The Roost.

CNN has posted this "to be updated" list of colleges with athletes who have tested positive for COVID-19: https://www.cnn.com/2020/06/10/us/univer...index.html

Right now, there are 15 schools on this list, 7 of which (including Alabama, Auburn, UCF & UT) have said that football players are among those who have tested positive.

Quite honestly, it would be even more surprising to me that Rice beats LSU in football than the odds if we haven't had at least 1 athlete test positive. The Harris County numbers are sky-rocketing out of control.
