RE: Deceptively named colleges
Winthrop University
Radford University
Longwood University
Lamar University

They sound like private schools, but in fact are all public. Lamar is part of the Texas State system.

California University

Is a public university in ... Pennsylvania

Oakland University

Is not in California, and not named after that city, but rather is in Michigan, and named after Oakland county where it resides. Note this is not unusual, many California State Universities, and even University of California schools are named after the county they reside in rather than the town (e.g. Sonoma State is in Rohnert Park, but named after Sonoma county, UC San Diego is in La Jolla, but in San Diego County).

Rutgers University

This is actually the New Jersey State University system

Those are the D1 schools that come to mind

USF is definitely a geographic misnomer—it may be south of UF and FSU but a Tampa is not South Florida.

FIU should be USF

FAU is okay; that one works

USF should be FGCU

FGCU should be TOSMSFGCU: The Other, Slightly More Southern, Florida Gulf Coast University

Then there’s Miami (OH) which is actually in Ohio.

I see people thrown off because Wake Forest University is in Wiston-Salem rather than Wake Forest.

USF makes historical sense in the same way Northwestern does. Tampa used to be considered South Florida because almost no one lived South of Tampa before air conditioning was invented.

Boston College is not in Boston. It's in Chestnut Hill, MA
The University of Miami is not in Miami. It's in Coral Gables, FL
Manhattan College was in Manhattan when it was founded, but it later moved to the Bronx.

Not quite what OP was asking but growing up I'd see Temple on the NCAA games and think they were Temple College. Also there is a nearby Troy high school whose mascot is the Trojans and colors are maroon and white. I thought it was so cool that they were on the video game.

Didn’t they relocate? I believe they originated in Wake Forest.

RE: Deceptively named colleges
Delving into the realm of DIII, it always struck me as odd that Washington and Jefferson University, named for 2 Virginians, was in PA. From what I understand, the origin of the name is that 2 schools, one in Jefferson Co, the other in Washington Co, merged.

I think it is called Central State because it is between Columbus and Cincinnati. It was originally Wilberforce University

University of Tulsa and University of Dallas (D-II) are private.

The University of Dallas is in Irving.
The University of Texas at Dallas is in Richardson and is barely even in Dallas County.
Now Dallas Baptist is in Dallas-barely.

But the Dallas Cowboys haven't been in Dallas since the 60s-they have been in Irving and Arlington.

California University of Pennsylvania is located in the town of California, Pennsylvania. (founded in 1849 during the California Gold Rush, no less)

Indiana University of Pennsylvania is located in...Indiana, Pennsylvania (birthplace of Jimmy Stewart).

Yep. And, since the Cowboys moved operations from their facility at Valley Ranch in Irving to The Star in Frisco, they are no longer in Dallas County at all. They practice in Collin County and play games in Tarrant County. Dallas is now simply a brand name for the Cowboys.

And yes, UTD is in Richardson, almost Plano. DBU is barely in Dallas, across a lake from Grand Prairie, up the road from Duncanville.

Oakland University in Auburn Hills Michigan (which is public) is not in California. The College of Idaho is private and not to be confused with the University of Idaho which is public. Pittsburg State is in Pittsburg, Kansas and not Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Transylvania University is in Kentucky and not Romania.

Alas, Concordia of Portland, OR is no more. They just closed their doors (as did Marylhust University a bit earlier). Unfortunately, more private schools in my home state are likely to close or consolidate within a year or two. Your point, however, remains unchanged
