Former Dolphins QB Woodley dead at 44

May 6, 2003
SHREVEPORT, Louisiana (Ticker) - David Woodley, the starting quarterback for the Miami Dolphins in Super Bowl XVII, has died at age 44.

Cause of death has not been determined, but Woodley had a successful liver transplant in April 1992.

This past fall, Woodley worked as a radio football broadcaster for his alma mater Byrd High School in Shreveport.

Woodley played just four years with the Dolphins from 1980-83, but is third in team history with 5,928 passing yards and 508 completions, behind Dan Marino and Bob Griese. He holds the club rookie record with 176 completions.

"His legacy was that he came in relatively unknown, an eighth-round draft choice, made our football team and ended up helping us win a lot of games in the National Football League," said former Dolphins coach Don Shula.

Woodley is best known for leading the Dolphins to the Super Bowl in January 1983, but he failed to complete any of his eight pass attempts in the second half of a 27-17 loss to the Washington Redskins.

After being unseated by Marino in 1983, Woodley played his final two seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers in 1984 and 1985.

In 1990, Woodley moved back to Shreveport and worked in the physical education department at Louisiana State-Shreveport. He played at LSU from 1977-79, splitting time at quarterback with Steve Ensminger.

I remember watching him play while at LSU and him leading the Dolphins to the Super Bowl.
