JERRY KEIL - The voice of the Toledo Rockets
Didn't see any thread on this, but I was just looking for the broadcast of the game and after finding it, remembered that I used to listen to Keil on the radio as a kid. So I did a search - and saw that he just passed away on Feb. 13, 2020. The obituary was posted as of Feb. 23 in the Daily Sun of The Villages, Florida (northwest of Orlando, Fla), He was 83 - I would have thought he was older than that. His wife Sharon, a great golfer in Toledo is one of the surviving family members.
Quite an obituary

"He eyes it and he flies it" ...straight to announcer heaven. I grew up listening to JK on WSPD. That is why I am a UT fan instead of my ala mater - BG. I remember seeing him sitting on the announcer box desk with his stocking feet hanging down above the stands as he did a UT at WM basketball game. He was a great - original announcer and a fun-loving guy. RIP Jerry......and let's not forget...BINGO!!!!!

I remember Jerry and the WSPD broadcast team on air spontaneously breaking out with a strong acapella rendition of the UT Fight Song at the end of a knockdown battle with CMU in Mt Pleasant.

Definitely better and more classy than Beier.
RIP
And while we're on the subject, did you guys ever notice as much as me how many times Frank Gilhooley would say "He puts up a good looking shot"?

Great broadcaster, he made you feel like you were sitting at court side watching the game.

I remember when the 6-9 forward (Fernando Righetto) from Sao Paulo was going to be introduced as an incoming Rocket recruit , Jerry led in the story with some Brazilian conga music...
Fun memories, and one of a kind behind the mic...

RE: JERRY KEIL - The voice of the Toledo Rockets
He was and still is the "very best" Radio Play by Play Announcer I ever listened to. He painted a picture of what was happening on the court that made you feel you were actually watching it. Combine that with his enthusiasm and his fun nickmames he would use for players or for what was happening on the court, and you had the "perfect" Radio play by play announcer. With that said, some of the colorful nicknames I remember coming from him include:
* "Tim Selgo from Downtown Pettisville" (Tim Selgo making a shot from long range)
* "He Bends, He Sends, Mark It Down" (Player Making a Foul Shot)
* "Bingo" (Shot Made)
* "He Cranked, He Banked" (Player Shooting/Making a Shot Off The Backboard)
* "We Got Homered" (Bad Call(s) by Officials During Road Games)
* "The Thin Man From Racine" (Harvey Knuckles)
* The Milwaukee Masher" (Dick Miller)
* "The Mixer" (Steve Mix)
* "The Footer" (7 Ft. Doug Hess)
*

and I remember doing exactly that. Laying on the floor in that dump of an apartment, watching the radio as he called the game. He made escapism safe and fun. You could feel part of something.

Interesting that Jerry was a BG grad and in fact, memorial tributes are suggested to go to the scholarship in name of he and his wife Sharon.
I think that for me Jerry was A+ and Mark Byer was A! Both at the top of their profession. We have been blessed with 2 of the very best all these years.

We lived in Cornhole, Ohio. About an hour from Toledo to the southeast. The family used to sit in the living room and listen to Jerry call the games. We were fanatic Rocket fans. My oldest ended up playing a couple of games on Nick's court in the high school regionals. He eventually graduated a Rocket as a student.
Jerry was part of the family. Thank you Sir.
