Monday Musings
A lovely weather weekend gave us a taste of spring in Ypsilanti. The mens Basketball team flirted with another road win only to collapse down the stretch. Looking like a first round/quarter final like team.
Ypsi High took the Lincoln Rail Splitters to overtime in front of an estimated 3,000 at the convo on Friday night, but Emoni Bates and Lincoln prevailed.
As transfer portal and free transfer options rumors fire up this could be a huge detriment to mid-major teams. A player could break out or be a late bloomer then transfer out. The best option to prevent this IMO is multi year scholarship for athletes. We shall see though shall see.

Agree the one time free transfer option could hurt G5 schools.
A lightly recruited prospect does well and after 2 seasons decides to transfer to a P5 school.
Also, I know some don't like the grad transfer BUT at least a player has to get his bachelor's degree.
What we don't need or want is having a player transfer after THREE academic years. This is bad for both FB and WBB/WBB, but ALSO ACADEMICS. Why should a student transfer after his JUNIOR year.
E.g., Player X starts his academics/athletics for 2 years at a JUCO. Then one year at a G5 school. Then one at a P5 school. Really??? Why should the P5 school want to take him???? Give him a degree?

RE: Monday Musings
I feel with most athletes being on campus all year now a lot of student athletes get their Bachelors degree in three years.

Agree with the caveat I would use the term 'many' instead of 'most.'
Where we are not going to see it is with JUCOs. OTOH, we WILL see it with h.s. recruits, esp. those who start mid-year or gray shirt (or whatever).
What I like for FB players is one redshirt season and then 4 years of ball and graduate in December of their 5th year.

RE: Monday Musings
O/T: I watched some of the D.C. Defenders XFL game yesterday. I couldn't believe what I saw: an unbalanced line. (no, we didn't run the Wing T offense, though).
I played some h.s. football and we actually used an unbalanced line - moved one guard to the 'strong side.'
I usually played the 'weak side' tackle which probably says a lot about my abilities, or lack thereof...

Steve, I guess your hs football experience explains the great football insight you share with us :-)

Believe me whatever I learned about football came from John Madden, et al and not by playing it.
I couldn't diagram a play if my life depended on it. I guess with an unbalanced line I couldn't even figure out whom I was to block... It wasn't the old X and Os with the DEs lining up outside the OT shoulder and the DTs on the OGs. Hell, I don't remember if the opponents played with a middle guard over the center.
And crazy, with an unbalanced line which was primarily designed for running, the two guards on the strong side double teamed the DT using the now illegal chop blocks.
All I remember from the passing game was: Post and flag routes. That's it.

I'm with you Steve - it was only after some experience and knowledge regarding football and watching football did I realize what the hell I was actually doing back in high school...

Yeah, my situation was worse. I went 'both ways' in high school... Which back then meant playing both offense and defense.
Anyway, I played without glasses and the coach didn't know I wore them.
One day he saw me in the hall with my geeky looking glasses and said, "I didn't know you wore glasses. No wonder you never tackled anyone..."

Looks like CMU-WMU allegedly may play at Ford Field
What a crazy idea....
I'd like to see the finances behind this.

make it a double header with EMU vs Toledo as the second game
Interesting thought. How would it work?
Two home teams. How to split the revenue and expenses??,

CMU gets the ticket revenue.
Still seems like they won't make bad everything they will spend. I think this is more of a 'marketing opportunity' in metro Detroit. CMU is hurting the worst among Michigan public universities in terms of enrollment. They lost 10% of enrollment last year alone. CMU is really hurting and I think they see this as an opportunity to try to get some Detroit attention to their school.

And their history of recruiting Detroit area players is they end up in jail once they get to CMU
