My question is why don't choppers, especially passenger ones, have parachutes? I had an uncle that had a plane with a parachute and had to use it. Came down in the top of some trees. Not a scratch. Engine failed at about 800 feet. Nose went down, pull the chute.

I don't think parachutes would have done any good in that situation. One problem with helos is that, particularly if they are pitching like that one, is you jump out and smack into a rotor.

Because that was the way to where they were going. Would it have been better had they crashed in the ocean or in a heavily populated area? Because those were the other options.

No, I was just curious why they were flying over a damn canyon. I sounds/looks like some kind of tourist site, considering folks had their cellphones out and ready. Just an assumption based on the video.

I didn't say the occupants have chutes. The chopper itself. My uncle's PLANE had a parachute. Came out of the tail. No reason a passenger chopper shouldn't have a chute in the tail.

Looks like a major malfunction of sorts. Is that video confirmed?

The pilot of Kobe Bryant’s helicopter was warned he was flying too low for so-called “flight following” – meaning the chopper could not be picked up by radar to receive guidance from air traffic control under visual flight rules.

Moments later, he crashed into a California mountainside at around 185 mph, killing all nine people aboard, while operating at “special visual flight rules,” or SVFR, which allows a pilot to fly in conditions worse than those allowed for standard visual flight rules, or VFR.

The pilot had been holding for 15 minutes while other flights were taking off under IFR, or instrument flight rules, and he requested the Special VFR clearance.

“Maintain Special VFR at or below 2,500 (feet)” the pilot confirms to the controller.

“Advise when you are in VFR conditions,” the controller radios to Zobayan at one point when the helicopter was at 1,400 feet.

The pilot then informs ATC that he is flying VFR at 1,500 feet and requests flight following from SoCal, which handles low-altitude traffic in Southern California.

Flight following is a service that air traffic control provides to pilots under VFR to improve their situational awareness and avoid collisions with other aircraft.

The controller asks Zobayan to squawk “ident,” which would allow him to identify the chopper’s transponder on radar.......................................

Some if not all helicopters can auto rotate if there is engine failure only. Never heard of one with a chute

Yeah that video doesn't look overly foggy. I also wonder why you immediately hear ambulances in the background after the crash.

It just sounds like they never should have attempted the flight to begin with. When LA County has its police helicopters grounded, taking a 1 1/2 hour trip to attend a basketball practice seems to be way more of a risk than need be.

It would take much more significant altitude for a parachute large enough for that helicopter and/or others to be effective. From that altitude, it would have been like trying to jump off a two story roof with a parachute... it wouldn't help.

Video is fake. There was dense fog, and the first video of the scene after the crash is filled with fog. It is a very difficult to access location and there is no way there were bystanders watching, let alone videoing.

There are reports that it was seen slowing down form 150 kts to 50 kts, then speeding back up again just before the crash. Hard to say what actually happened, we may know within a few days when the investigators get through.

I think we'll see that fog was a key factor and it's a good guess that (as is the case in the vast majority of US air crashes) the primary cause is going to be pilot error. LAPD had grounded all its helicopters because of fog, LAX was incurring flight delays, and the pilot of this helo was flying under Special Visual Flight Rules, which is an exception to VFR. It's starting to sound like this pilot made some tragically poor decisions.

Or was pressured into making them. We will probably never know, but I hope this tragedy didn't occur just to make a basketball game.

Is it?

After looking/listening to air traffic convos this didn’t seem to fit, but then what is this? Totally made up? A drone or something?

Weird schit for someone to make up...

Course, lotta weirdos out there, soooo

N/m. Seems some of you covered it pretty well. I’ve heard it was a straight drive into terrain, no “falling” and spiraling into the crash.

Tragic.

This is a crash that occured in Dubai in 2018. Also I will patent a chute for helos and make a fortune. It would open immediately. Would definitely soften the fall.

I'm begining to believe that this may have something to do with the vortex ring state. I have a feeling they encountered heavy fog, and simply hovered in one spot too low for too long, and then encountered loss of lift. It seems like they were waiting for control to guide them out of the fog, and control told them they were too low to be picked up on radar and needed to elevate.

"...Felicia Sonmez has received an outpouring of support from colleagues who were aghast at her suspension from the Washington Post. She was suspended after tweets reflecting mixed emotions over Kobe Bryant’s death, and while the media fusses and fumes over whether or not the suspension was justified, this is a classic case study in contemporary cancel culture. Sonmez took the reins on calling people out for alleged misdeeds, and now she’s being called out for her own.

It goes without saying that Sonmez should not have received death threats on Twitter about her mixed emotions about basketball legend Kobe Bryant’s tragic death. She shouldn’t have had to live in such fear that she retreated from her home to a hotel. All that is unacceptable, but in our age of cancellations and persistent moralistic vitriol, it’s what a person can expect when they befoul the Twitter stream. Sonmez probably should have known all this. She has been vocal about the necessity of removing men and women from their positions without the benefit of due process. This turn of events, where the social media verse turns on her for a couple of tweets wherein she expressed her personal view, should not come as a surprise...."
