^ and that revenue will be distributed to the other members...as I said on the AAC board, that money is making the ESPN deal far more viable for the remaining members. I'm not knocking UConn with that statement.

Yes, however you want to phrase it, there will be $17m more for the remaining AAC members to divide among themselves, $11m immediately and then $1m a year for the next six years. That $11m is like a $1m bonus to each school, and as Michael Jordan once said, a million dollars is a millions dollars. We will all find something useful to do with it.

I'd be very surprised if the conference elected to hold that money for a year or two rather than pay it out to the membership at the conclusion of the respective fiscal years, meaning the two payouts of an extra 500k are likely to coincide with the final two years of the much smaller, expiring, old AAC deal (last year and this year). The payouts likely to coincide with the new deal are the $1 million increments that will be made in actual payments from UConn to the AAC, and which will account for about 90k/year/member.

If an extra 90k per year makes things much more viable for Memphis over the new deal, you're worrying about the wrong school's finances.

wait, so we can't buy our production equipment now in preparation of the cost to come? the money we're getting right NOW from UConn will greatly help offset upcoming or future production costs...I don't see what's so hard to understand about that.

they still owe the AAC 17 million and we want our money. That 17 million will will cover up start ESPN+ production expenses for the first two years. (UConn must pay 11 million by the end of 2021) with the rest (6 million) being paid out over the following 5 years.

that means for the first 2 years of our new ESPN deal each team will get ~500k from UConn's exit fee.

The exit fee total can be misleading. The AAC TV payouts from 2019 and 2020 is $11 million which was to be "paid" by UConn in two lump sums in 2019 and 2020, with annual $1 million over six years. In reality, UConn isn't paying anything "extra" to leave the AAC; they are simply not getting their payouts from the AAC over the period (which, in turn, will likely be equitably distributed to its membership). I sincerely doubt the AAC is sending a check to UConn, only for UConn to send it right back their way.

The $1 million annually for six years is a much more accurate "cost" that UConn is paying in order to leave the AAC. UConn is getting a full payout immediately as a member of the Big East, and it remains to be seen what their football deal will end up getting as well. In the end, it is a necessary investment in order to move forward.

What will be interesting to see is how the BE and AAC TV deals are changed, if at all, after the official move. It is widely expected for the Big East to announce a new TV deal/extension with Fox on 7/1 (when UConn officially joins), and it remains an open discussion as to how the AAC TV deal gets affected, especially if they remain to stand pat at 11 members. Without a new member getting added, it is a safe bet to assume ESPN just eliminates UConn's payouts, while keeping everyone else's the same. That likely takes the totality of the agreement below the $1 billion figure that Aresco kept flaunting.

I don't know about that. ESPN has had plenty of time to eliminate UCONN'S share from the AAC'S contract but for some reason they seem very nonchalant or uninterested in pursuing that option. Why is it widely expected that the NBE is going to a new tv deal/extension? Are you guys expecting a per team increase or just a pro rata increase for UCONN? Have the NBE TV ratings started to improve yet? Honest questions not trolling. I honestly haven't been keeping up on the NBE goings on.

I wouldn't say that ESPN has been "nonchalant" or "uninterested" in adjusting their AAC TV deal; I would say they (in tandem with the AAC) are likely still considering all of their options to maximize value for both sides. Even though the AAC lost a member to another conference, they still have the advantage of time on their side to efficiently access all potential outcomes moving forward. Their temporary waiver being granted assures that. It would be a big shock if ESPN, without adding members to the AAC, would maintain UConn's share and just give out extra money to the conference with less provided content (and exposure) for the sake of charity. I would totally get maintaining the original contract if they expanded by one (which ESPN would have tremendous say in, IMO), or just by keeping everyone's shares the exact same (just removing UConn's).

To your second point, yes, there have been many rumblings about a Big East extension/bump once UConn officially joins in July, and that, too, makes sense for both parties. The Big East is gaining a national basketball brand program that is synonymous with the Big East and its history. Numerous networks and personalities have been pushing for it for years.
For a conference that markets itself as one of the elite basketball leagues in the country, they are now gaining a four-time national championship winner in men's basketball, and the undeniable top women's basketball program in the country. With its "home" being in NYC, the BE is also gaining a school with immensely strong ties to the city and solidified historical and geographic connections to many of the schools. Additionally, and most importantly, Fox is now gaining more content in the form of OOC games it can air for UConn, in-conference games with the addition of UConn (and the extension to 20-games for all teams), and an additional game/session at MSG for the BET (which will surely result in another sellout). Fox and the BE hit another new high mark earlier this year, when the St. John’s-Xavier game averaged 2.30 million viewers on FOX — the network’s largest college basketball audience on record. The lead-ins and advertising during NFL telecasts has been great. The B1G also just had its highest FS1 rating for Thursday's Michigan/Indiana game. The network continues to grow in exposure and reach.

Friendly tip: for someone that does not want to present themselves as "trolling", there's no reason to use "NBE" to reference the Big East.

Spend the money however you want. What I'm replying to is the statement that the AAC schools are getting a 500k bump in the first two years of the new deal - what's actually happening is that in the last two years of the current deal conference revenues are being split 11 ways instead of 12 and Uconn's being credited their share against the settlement amount. It's actually better for the AAC programs to get the money sooner rather than later.

So the current deal has an escalator clause based on this old article. So, the current payouts will remain the same for all members once UConn joins. I haven't seen the rumors, but I would also expect the Big East to get a nice bump if they agree to extend the contract soon after the addition of UConn. It would great to see a bump up to close to the $6M per year range per school.

Nobody knows for sure what's going to happen, but given that there is a thread here about how FS1's subscriber numbers have dropped to their lowest point in the network history, it would seem to me to be optimistic to think that they're going to give a 50% bump to each of the schools in the Big East (not to mention having to pay the extra freight for the addition of UConn) just because they want to tie them up for a longer term deal...

Compatibility is key.

UConn did little for AAC football, but will be precisely what is needed in the Big East as they bring a large hoops fanbase to a good conference in need of a public school.

The two conferences have different calling cards.

We'll see. The Big East is a marquee property in college basketball. Fox will want to keep it for the foreseeable future and will act accordingly is my prediction.

RE: UConn's budget Deficit grows to $42M
I'm not interested in trolling the NBE. I just use that to designate the difference from the "OG" Big East and the very relevant version of it. No disrespect. I also think that it's great that you all hit a high water mark for a game on OTA Fox but what about the overall ratings in particular? I mean the AAC tournament out rates the NBE yearly in the TV ratings but I don't particularly think that that one data point means much. Other than that good luck. I think that the NBE plays a very good brand of basketball and that it's full of good brands also. 04-cheers

I see what youre saying and I agree it's better for us to get it now. I wish you guys well in the BE and I hope we keep playing in hoops as I've enjoyed the series.
