Was checking out 247’s All True Freshman selections and see that Sauce made the team. Amazing to consider how well he has played, outplaying CB’s that were way more highly rated.

Future looking bright for Sauce and the entire Bearcats team.

He also made the Athletic's freshman AA team.

Major props to Gardner for having the intelligence and work ethic to pick up the college game so quickly and to the coaching staff for recognizing how severely underrated he was as a recruit. 247 says his primary recruiter was Mike Mickens. If anyone would be able to spot talent at the CB position it's him.

Just goes to show that rankings are largely b.s. Having a competent staff that can identify and develop talent is the key to success. We clearly have that here.

They still haven't figured out the NFL Draft yet. They treat those guys like a science experiment and also have much more tape. It's no surprise the recruiting is more of the same. Although, the schools that consistently recruit well tend to do well.

A guy like Gardner got passed over because he weighed about 150 pounds soaking wet in high school. If he was 180 or 190 he is playing at Michigan or MSU.

Dantonio, CLF and our other head coaches make their hay by finding the guy who is an inch or two too short or is a step slow or needs a year or two in the weight room.

Part of it is talent/potential, part is HS accomplishments, part is where they're going.

Fickell was always able to land top recruits, but one thing he was known for was finding the diamond in the rough type recruits. That talent is extremely beneficial at a G5 school and why I always though he could be successful here.

Most of the 4 and 5 star freshman aren't playing because they're on better teams with other 4 and 5 star people ahead of them. Not saying Gardner isnt a beast but he has played where a lot of others haven't.

He's graded as one of the best cornerbacks in the country and he's only a freshman. He's been awesome compared to juniors and seniors as well.
