I am going to say 7.
I hate to quote Josh Pastner. He, however, spoke the truth when he said winning is hard. Take Florida State for example. They win the national championship in 2013. 6 years later they are on their 3rd coach with their program in disarray. Clearly, they are a top program. We aren't there yet. Will we ever get there? It all depends on 1 thing - leadership.
Would Fuente still be here without Paxton? Who knew that he'd get a 1st round NFL quarterback?
Where would Norvell be without a Riley Ferguson or Brady White? This is extremely complex. You could be the best coach, but without the best players you will not be at the top.
These things are obvious. There are no guarantees. This might be the pinnacle for Memphis football. I certainly hope not. For those who say we'll keep moving forward I think it is being more hopeful than realistic. I do, however, hope that they are right.
For those who say that you can't win a national championship here I think that they are wrong. Already this year I've seen speculation about expanding the playoff. Memphis was mentioned as one if the 8 expansion teams. Things change. It's time to build a program and not be a stepping stone red headed step child. We can compete with the big boys. We might as well become one. Out.
