How does a team go from being unranked one week to 4th in the polls the next?

Well, when you are undefeated, just beat the #6 and #8 ranked teams by a combined 27 points, and also have wins over Creighton and Iowas State, you gotta reward them for that.

Seems pretty obvious that Michigan is properly ranked.

Because it would not happen to a non-P5 school that did the same thing. The same thing happened to Miss State a few years back in football went from unranked to in line for playoff position in 3 weeks time.

They're going on resume, and not on pre-season BS bias.

Of course, you need 1) a school to be undefeated, then 2) beat two top 10 team in the same week.

FWIW, Creighton moved up 10 spots from 22 to 12 by simply beating #9 Wisconsin. in early 2016-17.

In 2015-16, Xavier moved up 11 from 23 to 12 by winning four games in feast week--none of which over a Top 25 team.

If Michigan beats Louisville they will be #1 next week and should be.

I would contend Michigan jumping to number 4 shows the polls are less bull**** than previously thought. Preseason polls are all gut and bias. Now that we have results these polls should swing wildly if there are any surprises(good and bad).

Almost ALL div 1 basketball teams are mostly black and I have never seen the Michigan coach until today when they lost to Oregon at home. Take your bullcrap elsewhere. Your race card has been declined.

Not totally true. By virtue on p5 status you are in a better conference which gives you more chances to improve your seeding. Seeding isn't everything but it's a big part of it.

Very true you do get more chances to against better teams...

But you also get more HOME games against NAME teams...That is what the EYE test is...

Even if you are very good in very computer ranking but don't have wins against Quad 1/2 teams you wont get a 1 seed...But the deal is you don't have the opportunities to get those wins...Even if you run through your schedule winning by 20 points every game

OP appears correct, Michigan was overrated based on a few early season games. The voters would NEVER jump Memphis up like that.
