Surprisingly good start for us in a hostile venue. My expectations are not high for this game, but I'd love to be surprised as I was against Penn.

21-17 Rice. Offensive execution has been pretty sharp, even if there's still a lack of penetration.

27-23 UCSB after some bad offense and defense. Heidegger tosses the ball at Olivari, then Olivari tosses the ball back at Heidegger. And Heidegger throws his hands up to the ref. Thankfully no stupid tech.

31-23 UCSB and a Rice TO. Refs not calling contact inside on either end, really. And we've gone ice cold.

Martin continues to struggle offensively (0-4 FG), but he's at least been active on the boards.

37-27 UCSB and at this point we're lucky it's that close. Nothing on offense after that initial 5-10 minute burst. UCSB is hugging us on the 3pt line and daring us to try to score inside.

UCSB leads by a whopping 30 - 6 in points in the paint.

Embarrassing, but what's new. The play is almost as bad as the 50-year-old yellow shirt guy sitting courtside trash-talking 20-year-olds.

Trying to beat good division 1 teams with one warm body bigger than 6-7 is hard. Trying to beat good division 1 teams with no guard who can consistently break down opposing defenses is hard. You can do it if you have a great defensive system. We don't. Which is how you end up with 28-4 runs and 20 point halftime deficits.

69-58 UCSB. Little Rice run. Maybe not watching was the key all along.

Ability to get inside and make layups is a big part of the difference.

Well at least this didn't turn into Arkansas, part 2. We have some pieces to be good, but we're clearly not there yet.

Wow, we've close to within 70 - 76 with 3:53 left. Murphy with a couple more 3s. And least Pera has them fighting to the end. Would have been easy to quit after UCSB's 28 - 4 run to close the first half....and the were back up by 19 with less than 10 minutes to play.

Regardless of the result, massive kudos to Pera and the guys. As Walt said, easy to quit when you're down 20 at the half (I did). This kind of resiliency on the road will be big come conference play.
