He is the best they are going to get, but why now? Are they watching Jimbo at A&M?

Probably to give him a little bump in recruiting if I was to guess. The fans are getting a little antsy.

Why extend a guy who had 5 years left on his deal as it is?
It's not like other Power schools are headhunting him.
I guess it's a statement that they will either sink or swim with him.
He could become their Kirk Ferentz...a guy that wins here and there, but always keeps you competitive. Right now, Nebraska probably needs to think in terms of rebuilding the program rather than competing for championships. Frost is fairly young too so he's the kind of guy that could be around for decades.

Seems like a mistake. Another 4-8 type season next year and they’ll be calling for his head

I don't get it either, He had plenty of years on his existing deal.

Probably in Athens. He's led Ohio University to 9 or 10 win seasons 6 times, including 2017 and 2018. Enough to where he's not going to get fired for this year's losing season.

He still had 5 years remaining! No reason they couldn't just re evaluate after next year.

Well, IIRC, Nebraska is finally getting their full share of the $55m B1G payout, so they will have the money to buy him out if it comes to that, LOL.

I know they have the money. They also just announced that giant stadium renovation plan to the tune of something like $200 million. Still seems like a great way of lighting money on fire though.

RE: Nebraska gives Scott Frost a two year extension
I’m curious if this doesn’t have something to do with the FSU opening. Perhaps they thought FSU would be interested after Frost’s success at UCF but weren’t willing to give a raise yet to keep him?
If nothing else, this gives Frost some security in knowing that his buyout would have another 2 years of salary if he doesn’t pick things up and gets let go.

No question it's great for Frost. I don't think anyone doubts that, the doubts are about what UNL gets out of it.

Maybe...
I hated the Ferentz hire after Hayden Fry retired in 1998 but 21 years later he’s turned out to be a very solid above average coach. He will coach Iowa until he retires. He will never win a NC, but Iowa will always be ranked and play in a very good bowl.

My point was that maybe that is enough to keep him from talking to FSU since he hasn’t won enough yet to really warrant a raise.

I would doubt that. For one thing, nothing ever stops anyone from talking to anyone else. Coaches will talk with anyone, heck that's how they leverage more. At LSU, before he became cold product, Les Miles was a past-master at it. Every time the Michigan or Texas or whatever job would come open, he'd take a phone call from them to boost his pay and get an extension from LSU. Talking is how you prove that someone else really is interested in you.
Plus, I seriously doubt FSU is interested in Frost, precisely because he's unproven and also coached at UCF. The FSU fan base and especially the booster base is expecting more than that, they just went through Willie Taggart, who was hired away from Oregon despite not having been there long enough to prove anything, and after success in Florida at USF. A Frost hire would look eerily similar to that, something that likely would raise the hackles of the boosters rather than mollify them.
So ... IMO that is not a viable reason.

$200m is shockingly little to deal with anything large in scope for a stadium of that size. To put things into context ... Minnesota's new FB stadium cost about $500m to build and it's a modest but tasteful and well done stadium.

And now he’s top 5 all-time in B1G wins. The Orange Bowl/8-0 B1G season and NFL overtures early raised expectations.

I think Frost's connection with Osbourne has some to do with this. Frost and Osbourne have a good relation.
