I've seen one of those non-conference games. Rice finished that season 10-22.
Their opponent was a middle-tier Atlantic 10 team that played in the CBI.
It is not a fun feeling.

It’s not like you forget how to shoot from last year. This level of poor shooting is actually amazing though. We have 40% 3 pt shooters but you’d never know it.
because there is zero motion on offense to create an open shot
We missed a lot of open shots. We missed several layups as well.

Our talent is not THIS bad. Our coaching is MUCH worse. Absolutely embarrassing

Penn just won at Alabama, by the way. No earthly reason why we should be any less competitive than them.

Even if Rice had hit 3 point shots at the same percentage as Arkansas, it still would have been a 91-67 blowout. There are other things ....

Oh my!
I didn't get to watch but did Arkansas empty their bench? Did our starters get blown out by their bench?

Sounds like the Rice men were pretty miserable in all phases tonight. But no way the team shoots that bad over the course of the season. People complain about jacking up 3's, but overall that was a team strength last year and a lot of good shooters returned. Hopefully they can shrug this off.

The 3 point line is also 1 ft 4 3/4 inches farther out this season. That doesn't excuse how bad we were of course.

RE: Rice MBB at Arkansas
We couldn't hit a shot anywhere: close, mid-range, far. Looked like we were just throwing it up in the general direction of the basket. Lots of shots that were way off from long-range (we had the one sequence where I think we shot two air-balls in a row), but even close in, the shots weren't "agonizingly close", like rolling around on the rim. They were just clear misses. Hopefully it was just a bad night, because if that's how we shoot, we'll have no chance against anyone.
Did think the team played hard and looked scrappy. But you've got to put the ball in the basket from time to time.

Sounds like we were just throwing the ball around the perimeter and jacking up 3s. That's not an offense.

Sounds like a fairly typical rec league basketball team. Which is not what I would expect at the Division 1 level.
But you need ball handlers to probe occasionally off handoffs for the type of offense it seems like Rice is trying to run. (I didn't watch yesterday's game - I'm basing this off seeing a few games the last couple of years.)

The not being able to hit the water from a boat thing is problematic, but it largely overshadows the fact that we gave up 90+ points again. These aren't new freshmen. Pera has had an entire year to get the Adams/Parrish/Murphy/Peterson/Mullins/Moore/Harrison group to a level of competitive defense. The exhibition and yesterday give no evidence that he has done so. Even if our scoring does improve, which it will, we'll still have to execute on all cylinders to have a chance to win. That's not a recipe for prolonged success.

I agree that defense is my big concern. Scoring is fun, but a team needs both to be a consistent winner.

BINGO. We got beat by a scrappy pressure defense, which we have no semblance of and no way to handle
