"James Madison's 1 punt return allowed in 2012

James Madison punted just 34 times in 2012. Impressive. Even more astounding? The Dukes allowed just one of those punts to be returned.

On Oct. 6, 2012, Towson's Leon Kinnard fielded a David Skahn punt at his own 29-yard line and returned it for three yards. That would be the only punt return yardage recorded in 11 games against JMU.

For reference, Davidson and Samford each allowed a nation-best four punt returns in 2018. Harvard, in 2014, has come the closest this decade to matching 2012 James Madison with just two punt returns allowed in 10 games.

Believe it or not, James Madison's three punt return yards allowed is not a single-season record. In 2016, North Dakota State gave up zero punt return yards in just three total attempts. That record, by definition, is truly unbreakable."

That record, by definition, is not truly unbreakable. A returner could reverse field and be tackled for a loss. But I digress. I wonder what the FBS record is for fewest punt returns allowed?

They didn't mean that it can't hypothetically be broken, just that it's extremely hard. When people say "unbreakable," they don't mean it literally.

The NCAA's record book says the FBS record for fewest punt returns allowed is 4 by Hawaii in 2011, Army West Point in 2016, Arkansas State in 2017, and Toledo in 2017. The fewest punt return yards allowed is -15 by Arkansas State in 2018, when they allowed 8 returns. None of those team are P5.

Damn that is some smothering Special Teams coverage. And I know it hypothetically could be broken; I just like to nitpick
