ESPN is reporting that 9 football players at Georgia have been ruled ineligible for this fall because of selling their 2002 SEC Championship rings on E-Bay!

Let them sell them if they want to. Just what is the NCAA anyway? A lost remnant of the KGB operating in the US??? 03-confused BTW, any player on any championship team who sells his ring is either dirt poor or doesn't really like the team he's with.

Apparently not. That or their families are extremely poor (kinda doubt that though).

They sold their rings, so what? Its their property. It's not like they stole them or something. I know, I know, NCAA rules prohibit selling items recieved as awards while you still have college eligibility. Blah, Blah. But, it would have been okay for Fred Gibson to sell his ring after he turns pro and is already a millionaire and doesn't need the money. This is chicken#$@&. If they want to sell their rings they should be able to.
It's not like they were National Championship rings. They were SEC championship rings. There'll be plenty more of those. The NCAA has to enforce these petty rules in an effort to justify its existence. Bad Dawgs! You sold your rings....ooooo. Would they still be SEC champs if they'd never been given rings? Hell, next year give them a plaque! :john:

I agree that the players should be able to do what they want eith thier rings. However, when this is your schools first SEC title in 20 years you'd think it would mean something to the,.

It would mean something to you and me, GDawgs, because we love the game and respect the game. Some clowns only respect and love money! Sad, but true.

If this is true, then it's really sad. Sad to a lesser degree that these players would sell them, but even worse is the NCAA declaring them ineligble for the season. Somebody has gone waaaaay overboard. Nazi decisions like that really make you wonder who's interest they actually had in mind, the integrity of college football or the integrity of their own wallets. It's just plain horse$#!&.

FWIW, <a href='http://espn.go.com/ncf/news/2003/0514/1553806.html' target='_blank'>here's the Link to ESPN's story</a>

Mentions some names of significant playmakers. Still no confirmation on how many games they'ed miss.

They're just rings. I agree with you I'd keep mine. I have a State Championship ring sitting in a box in a drawer that I haven't looked at for ten years. But, I think about my players and the events of that season everyday. If I sold that ring nothing would change. Those Georgia players played their hearts out on the fields of the SEC in order to win a Championship not a ring. For anyone to question their hearts, effort or love of the game is wrong. These kids work their tails off year round in order to succeed on gameday.
Fred Gibson was quoted as saying he doesn't even wear rings. If he wants to make $3,000 instead of having it gather dust in a drawer then he should have that right.
The rings only have the value that an individual player attaches to it. I know I get a lot more pleasure looking at our State Championship banner and team photo than I do from that ring. Other people from that team feel differently that's their choice. I have given a huge chunk of my life to football and love the game dearly just as those Georgia players do. Just because they don't share your love of jewelry doesn't mean they don't love the game or treasure their accomplishments. 04-cheers

First of all, I hate jewelry. Second of all, it just annoys me that these guys don't seem to care aout the team.
