Haven't seen any discussion on this but this looks like a pretty big deal for the university and the region. Should equate to 20,000 new jobs over the next decade; $3B a year in economic impact; 15,000 STEM grads; $2B in research funding over the next decade.

Government spending like this always sounds like a slush fund to me.

Specifically, the funds are allocated for:

"Half of the first $50 million will go toward accelerating the number of STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) graduates from UC."
"Children's and UC will split the remaining $25 million for federally funded research."
"The second phase of the investment will total as much as $50 million." (anyone have any idea what phase 2 is?)

So I think this means the state is giving UC $25 million for doing basically what UC would be trying to do on its own anyways: expanding enrollment in STEM programs.

Presser from UC:

https://www.uc.edu/news/articles/2020/03/n20896698.html

"The initial investment from JobsOhio will be used to accelerate the number of degrees in the STEM fields awarded by UC to 15,000 over the next decade"

No clue what that means. I assume they mean "by" 15,000 total over the decade? UC graduates about 10,000 students per year, about 2250 of which are STEM (1100 in engineering, 450 in biology, 500 in Computer Science, 100 in Math, and 100 in physical sciences). So UC is already well over 15,000 per decade.

That would be huge. Basically increasing the size of STEM programs at UC by almost 70%.

Glad UC got the money.

Wish the state wasn't spending it in the first place.

This is a very significant development for UC and for that entire MLK Boulevard corridor that is beginning to blossom after completion of the I-71 interchange and the opening of UC's 1819 Innovation Hub.

A research university + a potential nine figure investment + a partnership with top five ranked Children's Hospital + interstate highway access + a substantial footprint of available land, all within walking distance of our campus helps take UC's research reputation higher still. And the entire region will benefit. Lots to like here.

The long term plan is obviously to encase the entire space between I75 and I71 north of downtown as UC's larger sphere of influence. 45, 000 students+ simply demand more space. I'm wary of how quickly they implemented 1819 and put it on an island, hut hopefully this project all comes to fruition soon

If you havn't seen the Children's Hospital construction, it's very impressive, I recently toured part of it. If you are looking to
contribute to the demands of research and have the generosity, there can be no finer Hospital in the State of Ohio, if not the world.
