I guess I really don't understand these new redshirt rules then. He's a grad transfer from tech, making him a senior this year and his last eligible year. So if he redshirts this year and transfers, he wouldn't have to sit out a year at his new destination?
Very confusing. If i am being informed correctly, would most likely be a medical redshirt? Not too sure of the plausibility.. just what i have heard
Think he'd have to go FCS regardless of it being a redshirt or medical redshirt.

I think we have a fairly crappy offense and are lucky to have a good defense. I dont think the defense is taking anything from the offense.
We also need Lala and Kumah to have anything remotely close to a competent offense.
I say it is at the expense of the offense because I believe that the change to this new ball control offense is, at least in part, in place to help the defense. I think the risk averse nature of the offense is also helping the defense. I also believe after discussing the qb situation with someone close to the team that the choice to go with Smartt was made in conjunction with the decision to run a ball control, run heavy offense. I was told that their are absolutely QBs that can throw the ball a lot better than Smartt, but they can't run.
I don't think there is any doubt that TOP and risk aversion on the offensive side of the ball is yielding better results on the defensive side of the ball. I also think that to some extent, fewer possessions in the game are making the opposing offense's stats look less impressive. I don't, however, think fewer possessions accounts for all or even most of the defensive "improvement"
So I think there are three things at play:
1. The defense is much improved
2. The defense is benefiting from not being on the field for the vast majority of the game like they have been prior to this season, which is linked to the change in offensive scheme, which I think hurts the offensive production.
3. Opposing offensive stats are diminished due to fewer possessions/plays. Also due to the change in offensive scheme which I believe hurts offensive production.
I don't know what game you were watching Saturday, but a less mobile, elusive QB than Smartt would have been sacked a dozen times. As it was, he went down 5. So it doesn't matter whether there are guys who are better throwers; until they get the OL fixed, you've got to go with Smartt. And, frankly, we don't know how much ability he has overall as a passer because the protection isn't there and the WRs have been inadequate.

IMO, the offense is worse because of the talent; particularly at WR. Then take Kumah and Davis out and it's virtually non existent. I don't believe a more up tempo passing offense would help the team...it would be less rest for the defense and more turnovers. We just don't have the squad for it yet.
I still think Smartt has the talent to play at our level. He's frustating to watch at times, but he has the talent and his deficiencies are correctable. From people I spoke to the QB situation wasn't really close. Smartt was the best when considering running and throwing. Williams was pretty good and a step behind Smartt, but they were so desperate at WR that they moved him there. They felt better to go with Smartt at QB and Williams at WR than Williams at QB and a freshman WR. deWeaver really isn't even in the conversation, he was bad all camp. Wolfe is a strict pocket passer that is probably the best thrower on the team, but they don't feel he's quite ready (was injured) and they would love to redshirt him.
The defense is obviously helped by the slower tempo and the offense staying on the field. The defense is still very much improved though. I believe, despite Smartts faults, he's the best option to win. He's accurate and he's got enough of an arm that he just needs to get rid of the ball quicker. he has to learn he cannot outrun D-1 athletes.
Sorry but I have to step in and defend the WR group, being a former D1 WR I see this group take heat on these boards than they deserve. Someone just called them inadequate??? and they can't get the job done without Kumah?? First off I have not seen this group drop 1 pass season. we have only attempted 1 pass over 20 yards and it was completed. The routes they are given do utilize their strengths, if you a going to have them run 12-15 yard routes the qb is going to have to have time in the pocket to throw it, because the db's are taking away the mid to long routes by alignment. Our WR our just as good as any team we have played they just are used in a way they can be successful. And for those who say they can't get open u must be at home watching on tv...because if u were at the game u would see their are receivers open. And of Kumah decides to sit out ok, he has 8 catches for 90 yards and u all are acting like he is Randy Moss, we will be fine.

agree with this...I was at the UVA game and Smartt missed reads on open receivers all night, and held on to the ball way too long hoping his first option would pop open. I think he has the ability, he just has to get better at reading the defense and going quickly to his second and third option before he runs. That said, more short slants to a slot receiver and passes to the tight end would make Smartt's life easier. And for god sakes but Smartt under center when it is 4th and 1. I lay most of the blame on Scott and his offensive scheme not adjusting to the game on the field.

I havent seem them drop many passes because they arent open very often.
I havent seen anyone on our team be as good as Proehl or to high point a ball (ECU)
Propel caught 2 passes 1 long post pattern and a nice one where he out jumped out db's, similar to the herslow catch against UVA... Prohel was a two * receiver out of HS much like our WR. He was just given a chance to make a play on a deep ball. Our DB just misplayed the ball. But he is no better than our wideouts.
