Just read a tweet Houston's qb just quit the team and hinted others are leaving the program after playing 4 games. 4 game rule given players leverage.

but 400 yds vs 486 is
486 yards passing in three games is 162 per game. That is anemic. Those are the passing numbers you expect to see from an option team.
On the other hand, the 133 per game on the ground isn't nearly as bad. The 3.3 yards per carry isn't great, but its serviceable if you pair it with a decent passing attack.
We had 206 yards passing vs UVA, the best defense we will see by far, vs only 64 yards on the ground @ 1.5 yards per carry.
I never said our passing game was great, but we have only 1 experienced WR and a new and different style QB. The passing game needs tweaking and the OL needs depth.
I guess I am missing your point. What SHOULD we do? At our level, it is unrealistic to think we will have an NFL caliber QB and/or multiple NFL caliber receivers every season.
Not run the ball 62% of the time.
Recruit/play QBs that can throw the ball effectively.
Not dumb down the offense to the point that the QB's only job is to not turn the ball over.
Stinespring is in the house, and this is starting to look a lot like Beamer Ball. Play offense because you have to, just make sure that the offense doesn't do anything that could create a negative play, and wait to punt it away and play defense. Beamer is no longer coaching at VT because that antiquated way of playing offense doesn't work anymore. Just ask Ed O, LSU went from playing 10-6 games to scoring 50 points a game this year because he realized you can no longer win that way. Ask Nick Saban. They are throwing the ball 35-40 times a game the last couple years because they realized they couldn't keep winning championships throwing for 200 yards per game.
You have to be able to throw the ball effectively to win games in 2019, and our coaching staff has decided this is the appropriate time to move from a very effective passing offense to a run first smash mouth football team. I will concede that they needed to find a happier medium than the air raid spread, as you call it, to protect the defense, but swinging 180 degrees in the other direction is not the answer.
Without going back and looking, I would venture to guess at least half of Smartts 45 runs were call passes.
Our issues this year are two-fold, the most talented passer we have is a true freshman that was injured in camp. Our projected starting QB was a pocket passer that ended up being pretty bad in camp and got beaten out by a dual threat QB. The other problem is we have a gap between last years strong group of pass catchers and the up and coming freshman on the team. Our passing attack is just not really to be productive at the moment, we have 1 good WR and our best QB is a dual threat.
VT fans would probably love to go back to Beamer. Fuente hasn't been able to hold a candle to what Beamer did at the program.
FWIW, last year Bama threw the ball 29 times per game vs. 38 runs and this year are at 33/33. This is certainly more passing that they have in the past but that also coincides with them having the best QB they've had in a long time. Same thing with LSU/Burrow, who have a great QB and are still at 50/50 run vs. pass.
Dropping back and passing the majority of the time would not work for this team at the moment. The team isnt just deciding they want to be a smash mouth team, its the only way they have a chance to win right now. Their strengths are running the ball and defense. Trust me, this staff would love to throw the ball all over the field.
Some here talk about a blueprint for a defensive game plan against us. Very few teams have a Snowden #11. That guy is going to be playing on Sundays. I think he's quicker and longer than UVa great Chris Slade.

Blue print is simple.....load the box and make Smart a thrower and even better a thrower on the run.

And you have every right to feel that way. I feel the same way.
I am quite sure that the OC and QB coach wanted David Washington to take over for TH, not SB.
We know that the OC had to lobby BW to go with LaRussa instead of Williams, that was stated publicly.
Apparently it was so clear cut this year that there was no reason to second guess.
The QB decision is and always has been on BW alone. He has stated as much.

I’m feeling pretty optimistic about this weeeks game. Just because UVA was able to shut our offense down in the second half doesn’t mean ECU or the rest of the teams on our schedule will be able to. Let’s Go Monarchs!!!

I was going to say, ECU and Navy are the big attractions for ODU. Not that they'd sneeze at being with Houston and Memphis and Cincinnati, but ECU and Navy are natural regional rivals in the making.
With ECU and Navy as regulars, then throw in a couple of ACC teams each year and you'd have a very strong schedule in terms of regional fan interest and rivalries.

Only gives players leverage if they graduate.
It takes away the redshirt year, so if someone transfers they have to sit ANOTHER year before they can play. You only get 5 to play 4

They stated they want to focus on graduating instead of playing for the rest of this year. The QB said he plans to return to Houston but I bet he'll test the waters as a grad transfer.

I saw this and the first thing I thought of was is if we'll see more of this? With the new NCAA redshirt rule, along with you having a bad start to your season, you could put some of your top players and redshirt them for the following year in hopes to have a "more experienced" team. Now this would require a lot of pieces to fall in place. The players would probably not be in the current draft discussion, you don't have players in those positions that you're grooming for the next year, etc. But in Houston's case, in hopes for them saving a lot of players, I'm calling they're cashing it in this year in hopes they don't lose the lot next year.
I do expect it to happen more, but it sets a pitiful message. If things dont go right, just quit and come back next year. You also run the risk of those guys graduating and then leaving.
