Kind of hard to make the comparison without either referring to men's sports in a women's sports thread or referring to women's sports in a men's sports thread. At least, doing it this way I am complimenting the subject of the thread.

I don’t have any problem with how they compile the standings. It’s more about seeding, and the conference tourney is what really counts.

That, and keeping the unbeaten streak going (!)

How did they ever get selected to join Conf USA?

If you've ever looked at a map of C-USA school locations, you'll see that FIU and FAU are isolated from the rest of the conference, hundreds of miles from any other school. They were brought in as a pair so they could have at least one school close by to each other (and could serve as conference travel partners).

Except FIU was brought in first, on their own merits. You could say that FAU was added (after *more* teams left for the Big East) for some of the reasons you mentioned, that they pair geographically with existing member FIU.

They also replaced UCF in a lucrative market when C-USA still thought it could have enough pull with television networks to justify continuing to maximize that as an organizational thesis. It didn't work, but it's why we went with the spread out mess we have now.

Owls give up a very early goal at FAU (3 minutes into match), so they're down 1-0.

Well !

On the positive side, I suppose I’d rather have 87 minutes to comeback than, say, 8, or 7.

20 minutes left to get this done.

We’ve had quite a few late scoring goals this year, need a couple more here today.

Rice looses 3-2. The slow start hurt them this time. However, they are still having a good season to date with a new coaching staff.

RE: Women's soccer starts off CUSA play with a win
After my complaint about Charlotte's easier schedule, they ended up losing their final two matches so they didn't win the regular season title after all. FAU currently is 1st with 22 points, 1 ahead of UNT and Charlotte entering the night (Rice has 20 points). If FAU beats FIU (they currently lead 2-1 in the 2nd half in that match), they are the regular season champs.

Rice can still finish anywhere from 1st to 4th, but a win will ensure 2nd place (or maybe even 1st if FIU can come back late).

RE: Women's soccer starts off CUSA play with a win
I'll assume that makes us the 3rd seed (FAU did win so they won the regular season). UNT now has 22 points and is the 2 seed. Rice and Charlotte have 21 points but we beat them head-to-head, so I'm thinking we're the 3 seed and Charlotte is the 4 seed.

I think that means we'll either play La Tech (or possibly UTEP if they beat UTSA tonight) in the first round of the CUSA tournament next week?

RE: Women's soccer starts off CUSA play with a win
An interesting note: the women's soccer team posted the 8th highest GPA in the country this year (3.73) and somehow managed to get nobody on the first all-academic team and only one player on the second all-academic team. These teams obviously mean nothing, but these amused me for some reason.
