I have several years' worth of post saying we need to recruit taller at CB or convince the depth of WR, there's a place at the next level for taller CBs that can run a potato drill. Two on the roster at any time. We can't keep throwing 5'6" at 6'4", not with the ever improving QB Passing coming straight out of high school. I'd hoped Mitchell would switch. Two jumpers in the secondary? Yep.

I think UT just needs to all-around recruit better at corner. With Clark hurt, our starting corners are Womack who was a very late signing and not highly recruited and true freshman McDonald who was an Akron commit who flipped very late to UT (as I recall he was a total surprise on signing day). Without those two, who would be playing corner?

UT only has 1 senior DB on the team (Robinson). Williams, who was highly recruited and reported to be playing corner at UT is now playing LB. Ford is hurt. We have 2 JUCO CBs and a couple walk-ons among the few healthy DBs. Now, walk-ons can turn out great (witness Ka'Dar Hollman) but it doesn't seem like UT really targets (pun intended) corners in their recruiting. Also, we've had our share of promising DBs leave (Covington, Martin, Roberts just off the top of my head.)

Anyone else think the first 4 PI's were good defense? Just bad late calls?

PI in general is BS most of the time. Its football, there is contact. Many times the ball isn't catchable, or the contact does not impede the reciever, but there is contact, so its automatically a penalty.

When the defender never turns their head I have a hard time arguing against the PI call.

Officiating in general was rather poor. Several questionable PI, loads of missed holding, spotting the ball somehow seemed a challenge, etc. UGLY game all around.

I thought it was nice that they had 30 second meetings about where to place the ball on nearly every play. The frequency of long discussions after penalties was absurd. How long does it take to say “Number 58 was offside”?

Someone talked to the crew at halftime because the number of penalties in the 2nd half dropped significantly or it appeared so...

RE: Grades
I thought several of the PI’s that were called on us in the Kentucky game were highly questionable. Last night, the first PI which came on a badly underthrown pass should definitely not have been called, and the guy on TV seemed to agree. The next three (I think there were 3…all on the same drive) were much more difficult to dispute.

Now that we know how the game played out though…those could’ve been TD saving PI’s. To which one could say, “oh, just delaying the inevitable”. But, considering the half ended with time running out on a CSU drive that ended at the Toledo 2 yard line…maybe even GAME saving PI’s!

RE: Grades
yeah, i only thought 1 was unwarranted. they were mostly all inexperience penalties. the dbs were in good position just didn't use the right technique to play the hands and ball inside of grabbing the body early. will see less of those as these dbs gain experience. because of injuries we are thin at corner.

RE: Grades
PI #1: Ball short. Defense looking at it. WR on outside decides it's a good time to somersault. Not touched.
PI #2: Announcer says CB had hooked the right arm. He hadn't. WR had extended his into the CB. Oh, and a flop to sell it.
PI #3: WR had wrapped his arms around the CB's head before the ball was sent. Added a flop to sell it.
PI #4: legit.
After that, our CB's put their hands vertical after the plays. I was concerned they would get an unsportsman taunting the ref penalty, lol.

RE: Grades
I thought only the 1st PI call was questionable. The rest looked legit to me.

Interestingly, just looked at NCAA stats, and Womack is 3rd in the nation in passes defended.
