***W3 SOUTHERN MISS 47 TROY 42 FINAL - GAME THREAD***
Line is -3 Troy. Should be a good game and will tell us more about what kind of teams USM/Troy will field this year. Good news for USM, all-conference WR Quez Watkins returns after serving a 2 game suspension. Odd stat: we ran the ball better vs. MSU's d-line in Starkville than we did vs. Alcorn State's d-line in Hattiesburg.. It's promising our run game appeared to improve, especially against a MUCH better defense. What's also weird is Troy had a BYE in week 2 so the only game they've played this year is a 43-14 win vs. FCS Campbell.
Score prediction:
USM 31
Troy 24

I don’t know how to look at this. Hopefully we will shake the turnovers that plagued us last week and hit the short field goal than we missed. Can’t decide which way to go yet this week on the score.

Who has the advantage?
Coaching - Troy
Offense - Troy
Defense - USM
Special Teams - ? We looked pretty awful here against State.
I think it will come down to turnovers and a couple of big plays. If we lose this game, we are going to be a very deflated fan base for weeks to come (as if we aren't already).

Game looks pretty even to me. Not saying Troy doesn't have better coaches, but they are a lot of new coaches in brand new roles for them. Curious to know why you made that statement. Seems too early to tell.

You sure you're ready to go up against the #2 defense in the country?
Troy fans still aren't sure of how this season might turn out. We racked up 527 total yards on Campbell, and held them to only 50 yards rushing and 93 yards passing... but it's Campbell. There were some rhythmic issues with the offense against Campbell. I'm not sure if the BYE week is going to be helpful because of the extra time to prepare for USM and fix any issues, or if it will be harmful because of the lack of rhythm Troy has gotten to establish with live game action.
The only thing we know for sure is that the D-Line and Linebackers are likely the best in the Sun Belt, and that the DC is still utilizing the same defense we've had for the past few years, which is very good news. Expect Troy to put a lot of pressure on Abraham. Against Campbell, Troy's D had 5 sacks, 8 TFL, and 5 QB hurries.

And I’m curious to know why you are claiming “Jaylond Adams really wanted to go to Troy, but mommy wouldn’t let him” on the Sun Belt board. I mean, according to your reasoning we have a kid who just doesn’t really want to be here, and all the media who reported on it got it flat wrong. Even Adams himself doesn’t appear to know what he’s doing or saying according to you, because his statements and actions on the matter sure don’t line up with your claim.

Wow! Great stats! Ms State didn’t even cause us that much chaos. Y’all must be really killing it on d-fense.....

Look for Abraham to get sacked 12 times this Saturday. And your run game will be lucky to get 10 total rush yards.

Quez Watkins will have 1 reception for -15 yards.
Tell us something we don't know...
How's Chip going to do it without Monken or Malzahn telling him what to do?

I would say that BYE week is going to be a disadvantage for us. If it was mid-season it would be helpful, but this early in the season rhythm is more important than extra prep time. Looks like McClain arranged the perfect schedule before leaving Troy for Hattiesburg...

Because he announced he would be going to Troy on signing day:
Quote:... So when Adams — flanked by friends and family on stage at Minor (Alabama) High’s national signing day event — calmly announced his decision to sign with Troy, it surprised everyone. Even his own mother. “It kind of just blew my mind,” Tiffany Levert said. “I was thrown. When he visited (Troy), we felt like they were just telling him the things he wanted to hear. Troy doesn’t even have the major he had been wanting to pursue since he started high school. So I just told him he needs to choose a school not based off what a recruiter is telling you. Education is first.”
After contemplating his future for a few hours, Adams eventually submitted his signed National Letter of Intent to Southern Miss, where he has been a bright spot throughout the first week of training camp. https://eu.hattiesburgamerican.com/story...526514001/
Also, I heard his (then?) girlfriend is now at Troy and he maybe wanted to follow her. His mother refused to sign the LOI for him.

It's not my reasoning, it's yours. You said it. I'm sure it was neck and neck. He was ready to sign with Troy and didn't. If he "just doesn’t really want to be here" like you said, Southern Miss would have never been an option. The media report has quoted her saying she felt it was the wrong decision to go to Troy. She changed his mind on signing day. Again, you said it, not me, so you're really just arguing with yourself.
RE: ****W3: SOUTHERN MISS (1-1) vs. TROY (1-0) TV: ESPN+ 5:00pmCT SAT 9/14****
This will be a very difficult game for Troy. Southern Miss's defense is scary good. If Troy wins, it will be on the heels of the Trojan defense I think.
A few things: Southern Miss didn't seem to do much vs Miss State before it became 28-0. Stats after that might be cool for Southern Miss fans, but it's a different ballgame after you're up 28 points. I did see some weaknesses in the pass defense that could be exploited. Troy doesn't have quite the talent Miss State does, but we can do some damage. We have the best skill players in the belt alongside Arkansas State and Appalachian State so I think we'll find some windows.
Again, I think our front seven is the key to the game if we want to win. If we can't stop you on defense, it could be blowout.
