13 children of fallen 9-11 firefighters joining FDNY

Quote:The children of FDNY firefighters who perished on 9/11 are blossoming into a new generation of Bravest.

On the eve of the 18th anniversary of the September 11, 2001 terror attacks, the current FDNY Academy class, set to graduate in two weeks, includes 13 members — 12 men and one woman — whose firefighter fathers were murdered on 9/11, The Post has learned.

The class includes siblings — two sons of one fallen firefighter, and the son and daughter of another hero.

The historic group of at least 16 “legacy” probationary firefighters also includes the son of an NYPD officer killed on 9/11, and the sons of two firefighters who died due to illness linked to their rescue and recovery work at Ground Zero.

This FDNY class has the most “legacy” members since 9/11, though dozens of other sons — and one daughter — have previously joined the force, said spokesman Jim Long.

“Bravery runs in these extraordinary families who have sacrificed so much for our city. I’m proud of the commitment these probies have already demonstrated to the department and look forward to celebrating with them at their graduation,” Fire Commissioner Daniel Nigro told The Post.

“I think it’s a great tribute to their dads,” said Gerard Fitzgerald, president of the Uniformed Firefighters Association. “It’s quite inspirational to hear that they’re following in their fathers’ footsteps.”

I'm not a hero in any regard but my grandson has decided that he wants to be a firefighter. He's thinking about starting out as one in the Air Force.

We. Shall. See.

Fingers crossed.

One of my sons went over to the dark side and became a Paramedic. He's worked the first two Clemson games as a contract medic in the stadium and said the Clemson Fire-EMS dude he works for has been giving him the hard recruiting pitch. He completed all of the NFPA Firefighter I academic work so all he would have to do to meet their minimum is challenge the practical exam so there's still a chance, but he really likes the EMS service he's working for now because they are busy enough to stay interesting but not so busy you can't catch your breath like some out there. Plus his new director is a guy who worked for our EMS counterparts and is a first class leader who looks out for his crews. I told him to do what he wants but he's in a good situation now and the grass isn't always greener.

The other is still trying to figure out what he wants to do with himself. He's currently working out west at a luxury campground as a general maintenance worker. He was surprised to find out that one of his duties would be wildland fire control on their property, and he's had to fight a couple fires. He told me "I see why you did this for as long as you could. It was a rush!" So there's at least a little hope there.

Hey, it's great to hear that your sons are getting interested in their fathers occupation. It makes a father proud for a son to go the same route. My oldest son took the fatherly route and became a jet mech in the Gyrines like his dad. But, I was the smart one, I joined the real Air Force, ha, ha. I like to kid him a lot and sometimes he doesn't take it too well, you know, Marines can't take a joke, verdad, UTSA Marine?

I really respect paramedics for their work. When I was a firefighter I only needed an ECA and I didn't venture higher. I really didn't like that aspect of my job. Give me a fire and a hose anytime. Ha, ha.
