This is similar to me in that I was not a "fan" of anyone growing up until I went to the University of Cincinnati. I was more passionate about the NFL as a youth. It wasn't until I my last year or two of high school that I started really getting into CFB, and even then I really didn't have a team.

I grew up in the one time where it was really easy to be a UMass fan as a kid in the state (aka I was born in the 80s and very fondly remember the basketball glory days, and even the FCS national championship in the late 90s).

So oddly, yeah.

I did

Parents were donors and season ticket holders. Dad was on the committee doing the fund-raising for the stadium.

Been going to AState games since 1971 and missed damn few at home since then.

Ditto for App State. I moved around too much and no one in my family was big into football. Met my best friend at App, who introduced me to the sport as a whole...and well, I've been a fan ever since.

OP'er here:

I've had family play football for WMU so have been going to WMU games since I was little. The family connection is why I went to WMU. But like you, I was more passionate for the NFL growing up, though. I didn't care for U of Michigan or Michigan St unless they were playing each other or UofM playing Ohio St.

When I was growing up Louisville was in a non power conference. However Chris Redmond was tearing up CUSA, their basketball team has generally always been competitive, they had just moved in to a brand new stadium and they routinely played BCS schools/conference games on Thursdays and Fridays which made following them as an out of market fan incredibly easy, specifically for a non power team.

Yes and no.

I grew up in Indiana for a good part of my life and my Dad was a casual Notre Dame fan.

However, I did go to UMass hockey games when we'd visit family in Massachusetts. So UMass was still part of my childhood.

I became a fan of Army during my sister's plebe year at West Point.

I grew up a FSU fan and went to UCF but still followed FSU under Bowden, but now I'm hardcore UCF.

RE: Any G5 Fan Grow Up Cheering For G5 Team?
This used to be very common in Philly with Big 5 basketball.

People grew up rooting for Villanova, Temple, Penn, St. Joes, LaSalle aka their Big 5 team in basketball and people semi followed Penn State in football.

Now Temple and Villanova both dominate the city by themselves. Penn State is almost completely ignored now except for alumni. The Rape coverup hastened their demise.

If you took Temple’s football program and Villanova’s basketball program and plopped them in the ACC today I think the Philly bandwagon would create something special.

I grew up rooting for Temple and Florida for football and basketball. I think it was pretty even until I got to Temple. Still watch as many Florida games as I can, but I'm all Temple.

Nope, my family was split between Tennessee and Alabama. I fell on the Bama side, but once I went to UAB, that was my team. Now, I currently work for the University of Tennessee, so I support them too (basketball especially), but UAB will always be my first team.

UH fan since I was 10 years old. I had nothing to root for early on, it was that bad in the post-SWC era. I went to an HBCU but never wavered at all. I'm more of a fan of that HBCU these days but still not as much as I am for Houston.

I should have been a USC fan, my Dad was a player there during a very notable era.

Being originally from L.A., you either root for USC and UCLA. I rooted for the Bruins growing up but I don’t really follow them anymore. I used to hate USC but like UCLA, I don’t keep up with them. If anything, I root for both L.A. schools when they play other P5 schools (except Penn State) in OOC and bowls. If they win, fine. If they lose, I don’t lose any sleep.

RE: Any G5 Fan Grow Up Cheering For G5 Team?
Nope, but I'm fixing that with my own child.

In North Carolina, the media and local educators all collude to shove the ACC down little kids' throats. They even suspend teaching for the ACC Tournament. I thought it was weird even as a kid to stop teaching on Thursday and Friday afternoon during the tournament, but of course, a kid isn't going to complain they're missing arithmetic and language arts for boring basketball.

Cincinnati fan even though I grew up an hour away from Penn State.

Learned to love the team from my father who attended rival Miami (OH) but was a UC fan despite that. I grew up with the great basketball teams of the Huggins era, and then got to enjoy the rise of UC football. This season we have season tickets for basketball and football.

I grew up liking a P5 school because my father graduated from that school. I thought I would go there too. Life took me to a G5 school. I follow the G5 I went to (WMU) and my current school (LU).

RE: Any G5 Fan Grow Up Cheering For G5 Team?
Not really watched much sports on TV (only having rabbit ears didn't help all that much) until my teenage years. I grew up in Central Florida during the late 90s and early 00s. In school it was all about the Gators, Canes, and Seminoles (all 3 were perennial Top 10 around that time). I liked the Canes, but latched on to FSU as my favorite during my adolescent years. My senior yr of HS I was considering FSU or UCF mainly. My mom convinced me to stay closer to home and the rest is history. UCF diehard since my freshman yr in '04 (yep, 0-11). Honestly didn't know there was a G5/non-BCS during those early years (only the big names were on OTA TV, or maybe on JP Sports / Raycom from ACC) until I started researching schools and learned UCF was in the MAC and that there were BCS and non-BCS conferences all in Div 1.
