The Academic Senate at SJSU has recommended the university reduce sports funding, dropping out of Div 1 athletics and the WAC conference. This maybe a preemptive strike to avoid getting dropped out of Div 1 football because of low attendance. One way or the other it looks like the WAC will take another hit in two years. If CUSA takes a WAC school, which it looks like, the WAC will end up being a combination of Sunbelt and WAC schools. Boise St, Fresno and Hawaii have got to be ready to , looking at who will be in the WAC!!!

yeah, this is a big mess. It's a real shame, because there are some good schools in the WAC. They deserve a more stable situation than this.
So at what point does the NCAA itself address all this conference shuffling? It's obviously not in the NCAA's best interest to have a Boise State or Nevada or Hawaii stranded without a place to play.
Look at our situation in C-USA... we're talking about adding UTEP more than 700 miles away from the nearest C-USA school instead of La Tech (right in the middle of C-USA territory) who would end up 1000 miles away from their nearest WAC partner New Mexico State... who is less than an hour from UTEP!! :eek2:
Boston College is playing in the southeast based ACC, while South Florida is playing in the northeast based Big East.
Does the NCAA step in and stop all this madness at some point? Conferences are eating each other alive.

Nah... they're too busy kicking up a fuss over state flags and free ham.
You're right, though... the WAC deserves hella better. If they'd (W-WAC) been happy with what they had and gone ahead with the binding agreement, we three E-WAC schools couldn't have signed it fast enough. But they weren't... wanted to keep their MWC brown-nosing options open, I guess.
It's a shame that they chose to feed the MWC's superiority complex and overinflated image, rather than holding onto and building what they had. I don't think they ever thought we'd leave. But "no binding agreement" sure sounded a lot like "we suppose y'all (E-WAC) can stay, but we really don't want you that badly and the first chance we get, we're gone". Oops... first chance came to the East. Buh-bye.
I really do wish the WAC well -- nothing is cooler than seeing them kick MWC butt. (Not even C-USA teams kicking MWC butt.) But, you know... they kinda forced our hand. (Well, once we finally got DEALT a good hand.)

I agree about wishing the WAC well in the future!! I was actually getting to like, disliking some teams and some rivalries were developing. A lot of the WAC obviously didn't like Tulsa's basketball team, because in some cases it was the only game they sold out all year-------a great sign of respect!!! I'm sure a number of them relished the idea of getting to beat us last year. I wouldn't mind playing the top teams in the WAC after we leave, if we didn't have to make those long flights-----Hawaii!!

You're completely right on both counts. For once, we got dealt the better hand. Second, with a binding agreement we might've stayed. The region rivalries in C-USA will be fantastic, tho... so it's hard to predict what would've happened.
Think about this. If Benson had invited Utah State and either NMSU (or North Texas) months or years ago, we could've done the 12 team, 2 division thing in the WAC. Saved a bundle on travel, the whole bit. If that had been in place when all the shuffling began...

Me too. The WAC was good. C-USA feels like home.
I'm really looking forward to playing Memphis, Houston and Tulane.

I think CUSA will be great for TU and the other ex-WAC schools but it's tough on this transplanted Okie to think that after next season he might not get to see his favorite basketball team in person anymore. TU will just have to get a #1 seed in the West Regional (hopefully that City thing was a one year abberation) one of these days so I can drive to it.
