You don't keep it. But you don't really "lose" it either. It's like it never existed.
You have 2 points (academic + retention) per player available in the Fall, and 2 more in the Spring. If a guy transfers and his GPA is above the threshold, they ignore the retention point for the one semester. So he gets 3/3 points = 1.000. No harm. If his GPA is below the threshold (just in the Spring), you lose the retention and the academic point, so 2/4 points = 0.500.
That's why the academic standing is the key for transfers. And it indicates some of Josh's and Tubby's transfers were not in good standing, or else we wouldn't have been in the shape we were in.
And, yeah - it seems Jonah absolutely blew this. You can't go with this story until the staff gives you the green light - or else you burn mega bridges. This kind of news is not the kind you HAVE to be first to break.
Someone had explained it as reducing both the numerator and the denominator by one for this player’s APR.

When did he redshirt??

He’ll get a medical redshirt

Supposedly they applied for a medical redshirt after his prolonged injury.

To be fair Jason and John mentioned that Wingett was home but his name was not in the transfer portal. That's the first I heard of it until I clicked on this thread.

It’s simple. Wingett is gone and Jordan should have waited until tomorrow

Yeah....he got a quote from Wingett’s AAU coach, who’s not making the decisions for Wingett and ran with it without the family consideration or the timing

Agreed.
As far as Tiger basketball news goes, we had some great writers at vital moments in Gary Parrish and Dan Wolken.
Those two set an unreachable bar.
But we have fallen WAYYYYY short in recent attempts.
It's been, as you say, pathetic.
At every turn.
On every site.
A bunch of carnival barkers full of hot air.
I'm done with coverage until they hire me, hoopdreams, salukiblue, and Easterwood.
Might put in a good word for a few more posters.

Nobody is celebrating Wingett leaving. We just know that if he is, there is a much more highly rated player taking his place.
I was personally looking forward to watching Wingett and Jones develop.
From their vantage point I would feel like everyone is essentially pushing him out the door.

Yeah that’s where I heard it from, Jason and John today. They said that he’s not with the team but hasn’t entered the portal. Seemed like the writing is/was on the wall.
Didn’t even know Jonah posted an article on it.

I agree. However, the thing that matters is what he is hearing from the coaching staff. If they want him here, they are telling him that. If they don't, they are probably (not so subtly) telling him that other options might be in order.
I still want Wingett here, think he could be a really good 4 year guy.

RE: Wingett BOH?
Jonah should be ashamed.
You can also say I'm crazy, but excusing 2 players and maybe backing off a promised scholarship to another better pay off in the win column come March or it will not be a good look.

I thought I read something about Memphis natives under a certain financial threshold get free tuition. It's a new program. I wonder if that's an option for certain players. If I'm mistaken about the program disregard this post.

Just more of the amateur sports writing from Jonah.
Always wants to break a story, no matter the harm it causes. I think Wingett will transfer, with the incredible level of talent coming in, it will be very tough to get a lot of playing time. If this level of recruiting continues, we’ll most likely see more transfers.
