Baseball Announces Third Signee Of Spring Period

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss Baseball Coach Corky Palmer has announced the signing of Patrick Maxwell, a 5-11, 190-pound infielder from Evangel Christian Academy in Shreveport, La., to a national letter of intent for the 2004-05 academic year. This marks the third signee of the spring period and 10th signing overall for the Golden Eagles.

"I'm excited that Patrick has decided to attend Southern Miss," Palmer said. "He is an intelligent player who has a chance to make an immediate impact with the Golden Eagle baseball program. He is a good athlete, who is a solid infielder and can hit for average or for power."

Maxwell is a four-year letterwinner for Coach Romy Cucjen at Evangel Christian. He has hit at least .400 each of his four years and holds over 10 career and/or single-season records for Evangel. He is a three-time all-city and all-district performer and was named to the all-state team last year as a junior.

As a senior, Maxwell is currently hitting .462 with seven doubles, 12 home runs and 50 RBIs. He has walked 23 times and has stolen 10-of-11 bases. He has a .925 slugging percentage and has scored 46 runs. He already has helped lead Evangel to a 27-10 overall record, a 10-2 mark in league play and the District 1-5A championship.

As a junior, he hit .419 with eight doubles, two triples, 11 home runs and drove in 33 runs. He walked 30 times and finished with an .848 slugging percentage. He also stole 12-of-16 bases and finshed with a .967 fielding percentage.

Currently for his career, he is hitting .430 in 141 games played with 160 runs scored, 36 doubles, three triples, 37 home runs and 136 RBIs. He has been walked 84 times, stole 32-of-44 bases and has a .819 slugging percentage.

Maxwell also was recruited by Auburn, TCU, and LSU.

The Golden Eagles other signees are Cole Besinger (6-2, 195, LHP, Minette, Ala./Faulkner State CC), Damian Dalfrey (6-2, 210, RHP, Eunice, La.), Bo Davis (6-0, 175, OF, Meridian, Miss./West Lauderdale HS), Jacob Fowler (5-11, 185, OF, Tuscaloosa, Ala./Bevill State Community College), Jonathan Johnston (6-2, 190, RHP, Jackson, Miss./Northwest Rankin HS), Bradley Owen (6-5, 215, LHP, Semmes, Ala.), David Steele (6-2, 190, OF, Mandeville, La./Mandeville HS), Trey Sutton (6-0, 170, INF, Laurel, Miss./West Jones HS) and Ben Wade (6-2, 180, RHP, Eatonville, Miss./North Forrest HS).
