Morehead State basketball coach Dick Fick reacted to an official’s call during the Eagles’ 97-61 loss to Kentucky at Rupp Arena on Dec. 17, 1993. The flamboyant coach led the Eagles for six rollicking years (1991-97) and compiled a 64-101 record. He was so well-known for his sideline antics that the late Jim Valvano of ESPN handed out the “Dick Fick Award,” which went weekly to the coach who showed the most sideline animation. Once, in a game in Cincinnati, Fick held up a three-point sign to the UC student body every time Morehead made a three-pointer. His most famous moment came in 1992, in a game against Kentucky in Rupp Arena. MSU was victimized by an over-the-back call. In response, Fick collapsed flat on his back, his arms elevated straight up in disgust. But Fick could be every bit as clever as he was ebullient. One summer, he picked up a newspaper and saw that University of Cincinnati center Art Long had been arrested for punching a police horse. He was immediately on the phone to Bearcats Coach Bob Huggins. “Bob, I can help you,” Fick said. “I know there is no way Art Long punched that horse.” Huggins: “How?” Fick: “He’s still in the lane from when we played you last year.” In 1997, Morehead refused to extend Fick’s contract, and in 1999, he publicly admitted that he was an alcoholic after he was in and out of alcohol treatment programs. He wound up back in his hometown, Joliet, Ill., as a part-time assistant coach at University of St. Francis, an NAIA school. On April 28, 2003, Fick, 50, was found dead in the Joliet apartment where he lived by himself. Photo by Frank Anderson | Staff

I didn't put 2-and-2 together. I now love Brannen even more. I lived in central KY during Fick's tenure. Never missed his weekly basketball tv show.
Best skit. He went to a local diner and asked if Morehead should fire their men's head basketball coach. Half the people had no idea who he the coach was, and said that would be mean. Then Fick would argue that he should be fired.
The others would awkwardly reply "Aren't you the basketball coach?"
Fick: "Yes, doesn't matter. Tell me what you think. Fire the bum?"
p.s. Anyone remember that Fick's son was a "walk-on"? He didn't look much different that his dad. RIP DICK FICK!

Hopefully DerMarr is retained. It would definitely make our coaching staff imposing.

Uh oh...
This looks like Coach Norman Dale's first practice with the Hickory Huskers.
I hope he doesn't kick off Cumberland for asking when they're going to scrimmage...
HAHA...now that's funny.

Thanks cuz I didn’t see it in the tweets. I will get to the presser. But this is good news. Still hoping for Nick as an assistant. Not sure he would take it or not but I hope he would.

He said former players are welcome to visit the team or the coaches any time. Open door. They don't need to call ahead or seek permission from him. It's their program. They built it. He does want them to address the team if they come to practice.

True Dat! A better matchup would be Brannen vs. Mack.
Any of our women coaches could probably take Mack right now; he just had knee replacement surgery.
a video of the first workout with the team showed Coach Brannen doing the dribbling drill with the team. I was impressed with his skill at that. I can't wait until Basketball season returns. If UC can retain the main players, it should be a great year. If Brooks did leave, well, we'll have Hardnett and prince Toyambi to replace him and they'll be a lot more athletic and quicker.
I hope Brooks returns though for his experience and potential to still improve his offense under CJB.

I don't want to read too much into that first practice video clip. But I will anyway.
I saw more smiles from our players than I've seen in a long time--body language suggested they were really having fun out there with CJB.
I have no inside information on Brooks but I wouldn't count him out just yet. If he loves his teammates and sees an opportunity for his own game to improve, it's certainly easier to stay put for one more year than to have to break in with a new coach, prove himself in a different style of play and mesh with established returning players whose roles are already defined.

Guys, no insider info needed... just look at social media. Brooks is staying. He's working out and hanging out with the team. Can we put that rumor to bed now? No need to worry about Brooks.

It would seem Brook's NBA chances would benefit from playing in the faster Brannen system. After all the NBA is a much faster game.

Tooba, do you have any links or specific sources? I have been scouring different twitter accounts and I can't find anything specific on Brooks. This is the only thing I've seen on most of the players' twitter accounts including Nysier's:

Does the transfer portal close Sunday in conjunction with the draft declaration? I think the transfer is always open, but i'm guessing your eligibility clock changes when you do it past spring quarter depending on your standing in school.
