I'm cautiously optimistic as well (shocker right?) but for those reasons and we saw what the addition by subtraction did to the team. We saw a group of dudes that really clicked this year. Those underclassmen have seen the dance, and seen just about every scenario this season and got extended time and practice.

We get back a piece to the team and add another. This past season we really added like 4 new pieces to the floor in Wade, Kithcart, Robinson, and Kalu. Next season we're getting back one and only adding 2 new pieces in Oliver and some unknown.

JJ is light years ahead of BW. JJ just took an average team to the dance while battling cancer. Since joining C-USA JJ has had the highest average finish among all C-USA teams. BW cant even finish .500 and get to the Planters Peanut Butter Bowl.

The key will be keeping X, assuming he graduates next year (he redshirted). The P5s will be calling and we need to have a strong enough program where he would rather be the leader of a team and take it where it can go than be a likely role player that gets on national TV. If we can keep X, Wade develops a reliable shot, and Zip and Dickens develop into legit bigs, we could be as good as Blaine's teams in 2 years. We'll see. In the past we haven't been able to keep everyone on the roster, some for discipline and others for playing time and lack of patience or to be on TV.

But if that's REALLY going to change, some of Tony's sets should be adopted.

I am not sure how studying Shaver's offense is relevant to ODU, but Shaver is certainly one of those rare coaches who could more with less better than most. Princeton's Pete Carril and UR's Dick Tarrant were of that ilk as well. There are others.
Unless W&M is planning to reduce admissions requirements for MBB, I am not sure what the heck they were thinking.

For us it could be kind of a chicken/egg situation. Is our offense "stuffy" because we don't have any big time offensive players, or do we not have any big time offensive players because our offense is stuffy. I don't know what our recruiting philosophy is.

IMHO JJ has run his schemes based on the strengths and weakness of the players, and for the most part done it well.

Time to concentrate on recruiting and free throws 05-stirthepot

I think the point is that Jeff Jones has to start implementing a different offensive system. His defenses allow us to compete with anyone in the nation. Imagine if we balanced that with an effective offense.

ODU goes through stretches of the game where everyone stands around looking at each other on offense. We generally get some good looks from the baseline screens, but we need counters when good defensive teams take that away.

Rest assure we have counters to counters to counters. Make no mistake, JJs offense is not perfect, but the big reason why we have struggled is the type of players we recruit. We aren't going to bring in X Green, Wade, etc. and then run W&Ms princeton offense.

To improve we can only hope to tweak the offene while maintaining a strong defense. That comes mainly through better recruiting. But, we can only recruit so well at this level.

A bit immature for a head coach, but overblown in the same sense.

I disagree completely with the bold part. JJ runs the exact same stuff every year. I am resigned to the fact that he will never have a good shooting team, but I would like to see him push the pace more. No more walking the ball into the front court. Push the ball into the front court, look for early offense if its there, then be patient and run the typical JJ stuff if nothing is there. I can't for the life of me understand why a coach of a team that is always offensively challenged would want to walk the ball into the front court, ignore any opportunity of getting early offense before the defense is dug in, and waste 10 seconds off the shot clock when your team needs every available second to get a good shot.

FWIW, Jones has been on the team constantly the last 2 years to push the pace more and get out in transition. They've sped up the last 2 years (64 possessions instead of 61), but he practically begs them to try to get easy points. But, they also crash the boards hard to so it is tougher to get out. You have to give up offensive rebounds if you want to leak out.

That's a good number to keep an eye on with Kithcart at the helm next season. View from the arm chair appears he wanted to cut lose more often.

I think making open shots improves our existing offense significantly. By my estimation we missed at least 6 wide open 3's against Purdue...3 in a row in the last 4 minutes. Substitute Goodwin or Oliver taking those shots and there may may have been a different outcome. Make 2 or 3 of those and the end of that game plays out much differently.

I have seen him telling them to push. I have also seen them push almost never. If he really wants them to push the ball all game he is doing a terrible job of instilling that. That said, I do think that some of that issue came from Caver not wanting to push, maybe because he played too many minutes, maybe because he doesn't like playing fast, but when Kith was in game and Caver was out, we definitely pushed the ball into the front court a lot more.

What would be that? and who are those people? Just curious.

CUSA championship, cutting down the nets. CUSA coach of the year. Road buy game win vs Cuse. Feces win and sweep of the toppers. Just curious - what else were you not aware of and would want?

Yes he has done a good job this season and i am not really discrediting his achievements and was talking about his whole tenure at ODU. This is his sixth season here and of course he didn't inherit a team anywhere close to Div 1 team i get that. While you throw the wins as Cuse and win over VCPoo i can show you equivalently bad losses in St Joes, NIU, FAU and at home to USM that lost to Longwood for crying out loud. My point being if he takes another four or five years to get us back to NCAA's he should be let go and may be even sooner. I get that some of you are in coaches corner and may be in their family circle but if you can't see past them when they are hurting ODU as a whole then i am truly sorry for you. My best wishes to him with his fight with Cancer.

No need to feel sorry for me. I feel sorry for your season tix.

Talking about a possible replacement for JJ.Texas is real disappointed with Shaka Smart. If he didn’t have such a high buyout he would be gone now. There is no havec in Texas...the kids he has recruited have not bought into it or him.It would cost around 10 million to buy him out now so he has job security for another year or two. Unless Texas improves immensely Shaka will be on the market about the same time JJ steps down. I doubt he would be interested in ODU job but you never know.Anyway..good for thought.

I would say hard pass.
It would be fun just for the amount of irritation it would cause the unwashed team from Richmond, but if he can't produce results with the unlimited resources he has at Texas, I doubt he could do any better at ODU.

Sure doesn't do any good to have any success around this group. One week after making it to the NCAA Tournament and people are already speculating about your replacement. If this is health related it is even more disturbing to be speculating about.
