RIP John Kilzer
John Kilzer, Tiger basketball player from 1975 to 1979, singer and songwriter from Jackson, TN passed away. He was scheduled to play at Memphis in May. Sad! He was a great guy.

John Kilzer was an awesome human being. And too young to die. I can't believe he's gone.

RE: RIP John Kilzer
John represented everything great about the University and Memphis, itself.

The University of Memphis is known as an 'access' University, which means that it provides access to higher education to a large swath of citizens (I know that that sounds derogatory, but I am a former University employee), with a particular focus on the Mid-South. It is fairly selective, but not so much that it would create 'cheating' to get in (ala our good friends at USC and Lori Laughlin no less). The University takes and gives 'chances' to students who may not fit the particular profile of the classic 18-22 year old high school graduate. The University of Memphis has a vibrant night school (very, very much so at the Fogelman College of Business) and serves a huge variety of students - many of whom are working adults. And, the students often give back in the form of teaching at their Alma Mater.

John lead a varied life (obviously) and had a tremendous wealth of life experiences that he shared with those he met at the University - both as a student and as a mentor.

There are VERY few Universities in the world who have the type of relationship with its community and its alumni AND its city that the University of Memphis has.

I've been to at least 50 universities across America and the University of Memphis is the most 'plugged in' to its city University I have ever seen. Part of that is its size (it IS a big University), part of it is the fact that unlike UCF, Memphians tend to stay and live in Memphis and part of it is the fact that Tiger Basketball had (and still has) an incredibly unifying quality to it for the city of Memphis (and throw in the fact that many of the greatest Tigers were Memphians).

Godspeed, John.

If I remember correctly he was somewhat the rebel back in the day. And it was quite appropriate for the career path he followed after school. Glad he got himself out of the addiction cycle.
Sad news for sure.
RIP John...

JK would not so lightly describe himself as a rebel. His story of drug addict to ministry was a special story. He is also a gift to help us understand that our life and our mistakes in the past don’t define our future. And to remind us not to be so quick to judgement of others. The screwup you are talking to today my be one of God’s greatest gifts tomorrow.

This hits me especially hard. I'm sure he's in good company at the moment, so it shouldn't, but it does.
