US women’s soccer team sues for equal pay, treatment
Quote:The entire U.S. Women’s National Team sued the U.S. Soccer Federation Opens a New Window. on Friday, claiming they are not paid the same as their counterparts on the Men’s National Team, despite performing the same duties Opens a New Window. – perhaps more successfully.
In a class-action suit viewed by The Wall Street Journal, all 28 members of the team alleged gender discrimination, affecting not only pay but also where the team played and trained. The complaint was filed on International Women’s Day.
The U.S. Soccer Federation declined to comment on matters of pending litigation.
The players are requesting back pay and damages.
A similar complaint was made three years ago by five members of the women’s team. A collective bargaining agreement was struck in 2017 whereby players were said to have received raises in base pay and bonuses, among other things, according to The Associated Press.
The team has won three FIFA World Cup titles and four Olympic gold medals.
The men’s team has not made it past the World Cup quarterfinals in nearly 90 years.

And people on the College Sports forums think there would be no issues if we paid he players on the football and men's basketball teams. Pay the football team and hoops team and the women's team would be demanding the same as the USWNT.

They both have different CBAs with USSoccer. Unsure how they win this.

I'm all for equal rights, etc but this doesn't make much since. If the woman's team drew the crowds and brought in the $$ the men's team did then by all means pay them the same. However, that's not the case.

I feel they deserve it. Unlike the US Men's team the women actually win.

Based on wins and losses they deserve it, but in terms of revenue generation the men bring in much more.

Yeah they have been successful no doubt. Women's sports also has been supported much more compared to other countries. As for the Men.....Soccer is major global sport, religion like, for men. However in the USA it really has never been one of the major sports for men.

But do they?
Quote:The gap between projected revenue — $23 million for the USWNT and $21 million for the USMNT — in 2016 stands at $2 million, but, as demonstrated by the revenue detail, the USWNT’s revenue is set to nearly double what the USMNT will haul in ($17 million to $9 million) in 2017.
from - https://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/uni...f53aeee5d7
If the above information is reliable - that the Women's team brings in more money - than yes, the women should earn more money.
But the 'projected revenue' could be a reflection of the women just being better and winning larger purses... for instance, the women might of earned $2 million more by winning four times as many games. Whatever the case, if the above revenue numbers are apples to apples, then they have a justifiable beef.

If the revenue is the same or more pay 'em the same. Not sure that's been the case over the long term though.

Based purely on revenue generating pay. No need to make it out to be something it isn't. I've said if they generate the same $$ then pay them the same $$. Makes no sense to pay them the same if they generate less, etc.

Yea, this may be the one instance, maybe, where I could see this. Tennis? Nope, but I think at least the big tourneys do this, golf? Nope. Bball? nope. What else is there?

There are some Olympic sports where the women generate more or at least equal attention to the men. Ice skating would be one, and gymnastics is probably another. I'll assume exhibitions featuring professionals of both men and women already pay them equally (with certain stars getting more than others?). High profile swim meets and track meets might be similar, although we're not talking about the same money overall, and again, the biggest stars are getting the highest appearance money.

Fair is fair. If they generate more revenue, then the ladies clearly deserve to share in more of the proceeds. The women's team has clearly been superior to the men's in recent years, so it is what it is.

Maybe US Soccer should schedule an exhibition game between the men's and women's teams--put up or shut up.
IIRC, the women's team lost pretty badly to a HS boys team a while back.

The womans team will get a much larger piece of the pie, but the mens team has a larger pie. Wofford has a better basketball team than Wake Forest, but Wake Forest will get more NCAA tournament revenue despite not even participating.
Personally, I prefer women's soccer (they win, don't fake injuries, and a lot of them are hot), but men's soccer is the worlds #1 sport and, muh capitalism.
