Group of students suspended in Arizona for wearing “MAGA” gear
Quote:A group of students at Perry High School in Arizona claim they were disrespected by school staff and even told to leave campus over their pro-Trump gear. The school was in the midst of a spirit week aimed at celebrating the USA.

Remember all the times this happened to kids wearing pro-Obama gear to school? Neither does anyone else.

Kim Powell reports at AZ Family:

Perry HS students say they were ‘disrespected’ for wearing MAGA gear on ‘USA Day’

Several students at Perry High School say they were disrespected by staff and asked to leave campus because they were wearing “Make America Great Again” attire.

Friday was the last day of “Spirit Week” at the high school and it was dubbed “Party in the USA Day.”

“We just wore all of the America stuff we had, obviously Trump is the president so we wore Trump stuff because he’s the leader of our country, right?” said sophomore Morgan Dupuis.

At least eight students in MAGA gear were brought to the office at the end of the school day. The students say they were taking pictures in their outfits and holding a President Trump flag when a resource officer approached them.

“The police officer came up and said, ‘we would like you to take off the merchandise and get off the campus,'” junior Tori Farris said.

One of the students claims a staffer couldn’t even explain the logic behind this:

“I was like, ‘isn’t Trump our president?’ and he goes, ‘yea.’ So why shouldn’t I be able to wear that for USA Day and quote-unquote all he said was, ‘I don’t have an answer to your question,'” said Dupuis.

Parents are upset, and who can blame them?

Arizona Central reports:

Parents say students at Perry High School told to remove MAGA gear, student suspended

Parents at a Southeast Valley high school are upset after school administrators demanded their children remove clothing and accessories that touted President Donald Trump’s “Make America Great Again” logo.

Parents say some of the kids are now facing suspensions…

The students had no trouble until the lunch hour, said Heidi Jones, a mother of one of those students.

“I feel bad for these children. I don’t agree with everything our president does or says, but I respect our country and I’ll support these kids using their freedom of speech,” she said…

Jennifer Farris, another mom with a student in the group, gave a similar account to The Arizona Republic, saying assistant principals were among those asking the students to remove the items.

Farris also drove to the school after hearing her kids were being asked to remove the clothing.

According to Farris, within four minutes of her walking into the office, she was told by school officials to leave and that she would not be allowed on campus again.

“As soon as they realized I was protecting my daughter, they were immediately rude, dismissive and told me to get off the property,” Farris said.

This is where parents need to sue the school board.

RE: Group of students suspended in Arizona for wearing “MAGA” gear
Quote:Perry High School has agreed to lift the 10-day suspension of a freshman involved in last week's Make America Great Again controversy, according to a conservative legal advocacy group that threatened to sue the district on the student’s behalf.

Scottsdale-based Alliance Defending Freedom sent a letter Wednesday to Perry Principal Dan Serrano and Camille Casteel, superintendent of Chandler Unified School District, asking that the school rescind its punishment of a student and allow her to return.

The organization also asked that the suspension be wiped from the girl's record, according to a copy of the letter posted to its website.

“While it’s good that the school is allowing (the student) to return to school, it isn’t acceptable that this unjust suspension will remain on her record,” Tyson Langhofer, senior counsel and director of the alliance's Center for Academic Freedom, said in a press release.

Terry Locke, the school district's spokesman, confirmed that the district received the letter. He said he was unable to provide further information because of student-privacy laws.

Heidi Jones, the mother of the student, told The Arizona Republic on Thursday that her daughter is back at school after a three-day suspension.

Langhofer, the attorney representing the student, called the 10-day suspension “a drastic overreaction” that shows the punishment “was motivated by something other than (the girl) not giving her name.”

“There is ample evidence to establish that you imposed the suspension against (the student) based on a disagreement with the viewpoint of (the student's) message,” he wrote in the letter to the district. “Multiple videos demonstrate the hostility that school officials displayed towards the messages expressing support for President Trump and his MAGA slogan.”

Langhofer cited constitutional principles that students don't give up their First Amendment freedoms when they enter a school.

“What we have here is school administrators acting as if the expression of wearing MAGA shirts or having the flag is somehow so provocative that students aren’t going to be able to engage in their work. How school administrators responded to this rather than recognizing that everybody can express a difference of opinion is what led this to escalate," Langhofer told The Republic.
