I read an interesting thread in the Big 10 archives about Dyche Stadium (N'western's football stadium), about how it got its name, and what happened when they tried to rename the stadium. Can any older Dawgs tell me the history of Sanford Stadium, how it got its name, and any interesting stories about the stadium itself??

I believe it got it's name from Sanford Stegeman.

I could be wrong though.

I guess I qualify as one of the Old Dawgs. When I was a student, there was a time you could watch games from the bridge and from the Railroad tracks. "The tracks" were a party and a half. We took couches, sleeping bags, kegs, set up scaffolding on Fridays and stayed the night before games.

I remember one time a train came up while a game was going on, noone left and the train just backed up and left.

Playing schicken with a locomotive, waaaaay cool. 03-cool

But really, ya'll should ask a Gamecock fan about the story behind planting hedges. They probably researched it before borrowing your tradition. 03-wink

WOW. I never knew that. I would give my left nut to be able to watch the football games on a coach, on the bridge
