Ranked #80 prospect per SI.
From the article: "He might have a better chance of being drafted if he stays another season."
As a UC fan I am all in favor.
Surprised to see Tacko Fall only at #74. I would think the guy is guaranteed to be a long term NBA backup center.

Too many teams are playing stretch 5s. 15 years ago he's probably picked in the top half of the first round.

I dunno... He just doesn't seem to be coordinated. His game becomes less effective in the NBA with illegal defense when he can't just sit in the paint and take up space.

Plus the fact that he can't shoot from outside of 6 feet, which is a little problematic in a space and pace game...

There might be only ONE upper classman drafted in the first round this year - and this is a relatively weak draft. Interpret this however you want about the "skill" level of the NBA.

Jarron isn't getting drafted after this year. No worries.

In the midst of college BB recruiting scandals, can anyone explain to me how Vanderbilt...Vanderbilt?!?!?...has 2 freshman on this list, including #6 overall?
I'm not saying...I'm just saying...

Tacko isn't fast/athletic enough. The pace of the nba can be blistering and he'll get left behind. i remember listening to a podcast about the 7 seconds or less phoenix suns and how much they relished playing Yao and Shaq because they knew they could make it a track meet and smoke those guys. Tacko is no where near as valuable as those two obviously.

The problem Jarron Cumberland will have coming back for his senior year will be his age...currently 21, will be 22 start of next season and turning 23 when he would be starting in the NBA. The NBA values talent AND youth....Marcus Smart is only 24 and was drafted 5 years ago by the Celtics...but he was young for his age at Oklahoma State and blew up his Sophomore year and became a lottery pick. Smart is listed at 6-4 220 by the Celtics as a SG/PG.
Marcus Smart came to the NBA after Sophomore season as a 19 year old with these numbers below (lost in the 1st round NCAA to Gonzaga with a stat line of 20 Pts, 10 rebs, 5 Asts and 5 Stls).
Smart - Soph numbers Oklahoma State
32.7 MPG 18.0 PPG 5.9 RPG 4.8 APG 2.9 SPG .422 FG% .299 3P% .728 FT%
Cumberand - Junior numbers Cincinnati
31.3 MPG 19.0 PPG 4.1 RPG 3.4 APG 1.3 SPG .422 FG% .424 3P% .766 FT%
Uhhhhh. Marcus Smart is probably the best perimeter defender in the game and if not is easily top 3, while also scoring as well as Cumberland did as an 19 year old sophomore in the big 12. He also played point guard both years at OK State, not the 2. Not exactly your best comparison.
Yeah, that's a terrible comp honestly. I don't think Cumberland could get close to Smart's defensive abilities, and they play differently on the offensive end as well. I think he is probably closer to a Kent Bazemore if I had to comp to a current NBA player with similar skill sets and weaknesses.
Tell me how you guys really feel I saw someone say a poor man James Harden a few weeks back on here for Cumberland . I was watching the Celtics vs. Pistons game and I was seeing in Smart some of the things Cumberland does well. Bottom line, if Cumberland's offensive numbers hold steady and he keeps turnovers down while creating assists...he has a chance (would need a big March) to get a team or two in the league to fall in love with his game.
Defense is a mentality...if he truly wants to leave as a junior for the NBA ...hustle defensive rebound plays and more active hands on defense creating turnovers would have him start showing up on draft boards.
I was a bit harsh ...I mean, offensively the Smart comp makes some sense, even if he was a bit more of a volume guy than JC is and he wasn't as solid of a shooter, but they are incredibly different defensive players, and they always have been. Cumberland is opportunistic on defense, but definitely takes plays off...Smart is a friggin bulldog and always has been even back at Okie State.
The Harden thing isn't CRAZY. I mean, his FT rate is incredibly high, he's a competent shooter, they're roughly the same size and athletic ability (Harden could barely dunk at Arizona State), the issue is that people see the player now vs. the player in the same situation (ie. Harden at ASU vs. the guy averaging 40 ppg over the last month in the NBA).
To be clear, I think the people who say JC's game doesn't translate are a bit off...to me, his game translates far better than Evans' ever did.
The Harden/Jarron makes sense in a lot of ways stylistically as you all have stated. That said no team besides the rockets play that way and Jarron obviously wouldn't be valued similarly. Jarron's cons have been already noted so there's no reason to rehash but, imo, his athleticism is his major fault and i don't know how much of htat he can make up by coming back. i think he can go to Europe or G League. May be a two way like Troy is with ORL.

BearcatMan;
Can you elaborate on this statement? Jake's athleticism and shooting (which started to disappear towards the end of the season) made him an ideal 3 and D wing (maybe slightly less then ideal height). That seems perfect for today's NBA. Jarron's game seems to be the one that translates more towards the late 90s early aughts NBA. Just curious.
