Bennett, Tubbs & Rompola were in Austin for the third leg of their tri-city Texas tour tonight. Overall, it was a great setting and about 40 area alums were in attendance (50 in Houston & 30 in San Antonio apparently). The common theme from all coaches was their excitement for C-USA and all the regional rivalries that will ensue (continue for some). Additionally, the reduced financial and physical strains on our teams from less travel should be an enormous benefit according to our coaches.

Rompola started the evening off with a brief summary of last years team and our bad luck with ACL injuries to starters from last year. She stated that a 6'3" redshirt freshmen from Virginia could very well become a superstar player on the Hilltop along w/ our recovered PG. Sorry you'll, I can't remember the names.

Tubbs went next, and I have to say that I was impressed by the man as he told us few stories about how he arrived on the Hilltop as head coach (had to be there). It sounds like he learned quite a bit and took plenty of notes from Kelvin Sampson in his two year stint with OU (very complimentary of Sampson as a players coach). Coach Tubbs knows he needs to win and is not making any excuses for this years team, in fact, he's very excited about next years team and thinks the nucleus is there for a strong future. He citied the strengths of Hopkins, Bennett, Isham, Castro, Simpson and our new JC bigman. I can't help but believe that our kids are going to play hard for Tubbs after hearing his natural enthusiam for people and the game of basketball. Afterwards, he briefly went through his recent hirings and hinted that the remaining spot will be filled with a high energy coach that loves to recuit (sorry, no name dropping occurred).

The last speaker was Bennett. He started off with the obvious issue of 0-12 and all the pains from last season. Our QB situation is improved and the Juco's along with Phillips all seems to be making strides and each bring something to table. Our offensive line looks to be improved over last year however depth will be a concern (keep fingers crossed for good health). Also, defensively we should be improved as TEAM defense will the focus this year, cutting out the one mental mistake that results in 6 points the other way. Coach did mention that we might be playing a team that resides within a 100 mile radius of Austin in the near future, not to name names nor the year.

All in all, it was a good, friendly evening with the coaches, Mustang Club and Athletic Department. It is good to see SMU taking some initiative and reaching out to alums in different parts of the state, especially here in Austin where it's all about the ugliest color on the earth. Good job Mustangs, events like this help bring back alums.

Is it September yet?
