I have limited sympathy for our team after they let UNT roll the ball down the court.

...and we turned the ball over 4 of our final 6 possessions. Yes, the refs were horrendous, but we choked this game away.

I think they were afraid of getting called for a foul.

Well this crew certainly would be capable of doing that.

Yeah, thinking about it more, I'm pretty sure the coaches figured we'd be called for a foul. It's a tough situation there. You have to defend tightly with 6 seconds left, but how do you do that in this game without fouling?

Sure makes it easier to have a 13 game home winning streak at home with crap like this. Glad Scott registered his feelings at the end.

I mean who gets 20 fouls in a 20 min half? I don't think we can underestimate how uncertain of everything that would make the team feel.

Well, at UTEP, they didn't tell anyone to watch the in-bounds pass, so that it might be stolen away after it bounced!

Clearly last-second strategy has not been a coaching focus. Probably because it hasn't been needed in, like, forever. Now that they've recruited and coached the Owls to be last-play contenders (WooHoo!! Love this!! Keep it up, coaches & players!), the coaches clearly need to spend more time developing and teaching winning tactics for those situations.

More bad news today is that Middle Tennessee and Charlotte both won. Thursday is pretty much a must win to stay out of the bottom pod (and even a win Thursday might not be enough).

Making any kind of move towards the rolling ball should get it picked up immediately. I don't think that alone should put the player in risk of fouling. I don't think I have ever seen a ball roll that far in a game in a situation like that. It was like they were doing something we didn't expect at all.

I attended the game completely convinced we would lose. I was pretty stunned we had the big 2nd half lead. The ending was unfortunately yet another in a long list of similar outcomes I have experienced as a Rice fan.

For those curious about the stats once Rice went up 68-52 with 7:06 left (and when UNT started pressing):

UNT: 24 points, 6-7 FG, 10-14 FT, 1 foul, 1 TO
Rice: 7 points, 3-8 FG, 0-2 FT, 10 fouls, 6 TO

Thanks for doing the research. Guess the positive is we went from a 16 point loss at home to the best team in CUSA to a 1 point loss on the road to them.

Seems odd that the pressing team amassed one foul while we accumulated ten.

Did not see the game, but it would appear that we went into our old, "we've got a big lead, let's try not to lose it," mentality. When you have a big lead, keep scoring and don't foul. If they are pressing, don't be satisfied to break the press and then slow it down. The press is an inherently unsound defense. If you break it, there should be an easy score somewhere. So take it.

Keep scoring and don't foul, and it's pretty hard to lose a big lead. Guy V used to challenge his teams. In that situation, up 68-52 with 7 minutes to go, he'd say something like, "If we get to 90, they can't catch us." I always thought that was a good way to look at it. And if you pressed them, you got an endless stream of slam dunks in your face.

+1 I'd rather lose by missing open shots with 20 seconds left on the clock after breaking the press than by bleeding the clock and settling for contested shots.

How we got 10 fouls and they got 1 would appear to be that we weren't forcing the action on offense, and we were playing too aggressively on defense. You're up 16, you don't need blocks or turnovers, you just need to keep scoring and keep the clock running.
