RE: NIU set to name 23rd head coach
Quote:DeKALB – Northern Illinois will name former Huskies running back Thomas Hammock its new head coach Friday, according to several reports.

According to news first reported by Stadium’s Brett McMurphy, Hammock will be the school’s 23rd head coach.

The school declined to announce who the coach would be in a news release and would not comment on reports Thursday night. In the advisory, NIU said the news conference to announce the hiring will be at 10 a.m. Friday, with an accompanying video stream on ESPN3.

Hammock, 37, has been the running backs coach for the Baltimore Ravens since 2014.
With the Ravens, Hammock coached unheralded second-year player Alex Collins to a near-1,000-yard rushing season as the Ravens won the AFC North title.

Previous to offensive coaching stints at Wisconsin (assistant head coach and running backs coach (from 2011 to 2013) and Minnesota (2010 co-offensive coordinator after serving as running backs coach from 2007 to 2009). Hammock coached the running backs at NIU for the 2005 and 2006 seasons.

After a career at NIU that included two 1,000-yard rushing seasons, Hammock was a graduate assistant at Wisconsin in 2003 and 2004. He coached standout Anthony Davis for the Badgers.

RE: NIU set to name 23rd head coach
By all accounts he has done well with coaching RBs. Though in one article they referred to him tutoring Garrett Wolfe and mentioning Wolfe's stats at NIU. But before Hammock got there Wolfe ran for 1,656 yards with a 6.5 ypc average in 2004.

And of course, he won't be coaching RBs now. But I'm hopeful it will work out.

That seems like a real good hire for NIU...
He was a beast at RB for the Huskies ...

Hope that this goes as well as the last NIU grad coming from an NFL position coach gig to the MAC (Fleck). Seems like a solid hire on paper.

Went to Be the Temple HC last week. He took some of the staff and it sounds like Hammock will be bringing in all new guys. Salary and staff TBD.

Thank you. Did he get tired of coaching football?

Was looking forward to having a nicer, more forgiving fan base in Philly.

RE: NIU set to name 23rd head coach
Hammock was awesome and would have had a decent pro career, but if memory serves, they discovered a heart issue and he had to give up his playing career. Nice story for him to return as head coach. Only downer is wasn’t BG’s recent flameout coach also an RB coach at TT before he took over at BG? Any successful RB to head coach stories out there?

That's my view, too. Seems to check all of the boxes and his NIU background is a big plus, I'd think.

Hammock was a great RB at NIU, but IIRC his teams had difficulty beating Toledo, hope he has the same issues as HC.

Five year contract with a base salary of $500,000, plus additional $100,000 for media responsibilities.
