RE: OT: CMU looking at Jim McElwain
Us at CMU are happy with the decision. The guy turned CSU into a pretty good mid major, they won 10 games for the first time in 12 seasons under him. He was SEC COY in 2015 and people forget Florida was a disaster in the two years prior to him getting there. He was fired for other reasons at Florida as well, not simply coaching.
Obviously this means nothing until we see the product on the field. But the guy was Coach of the year at the G5 and P5 level. More importantly, it was recent too, not some accolade from 20 years ago. I don't see why any MAC team would look down on that. This is a big time hire on paper.

We’ll see I suppose. My UM contacts are happy he is leaving, for whatever that’s worth.

Good luck on your hire, as Urban, Harbaugh and Franklin have proved in the Big Ten, the rising tide lifts all boats and that will be great for the MAC. He has a history with your AD and that says a lot about his selection as well. His press conference was impressive also.
I hope you pay him well. Lester at Western is making $800K, I have heard that you are giving him $700K and paying off Bonamego as well. It certainly should quiet some of the noise about Creighton's ultra exorbitant EMU salary of $500K!

McElwain has a $400,000 base salary. Bonuses will push it up to around $650,000. Built-in incentives could have him earn approximately $1,000,000 should he meet them all, which isn't likely.
Bono's buyout was settled today and is $834,000. Was originally supposed to be roughly $1.2 million.

Seems like a fairly intelligent contract with the objective of keeping the guy long enough to rebuild the program. If after 3 or 4 years it is pretty cheap to cut the cord.
I do think the "additional compensation" issue is a little sneaky. Apparently those dollar amounts are not tied to any performance objectives thus I would not categorize them as a "bonus", instead they seem to be additional base salary. Then again as an EMU fan where the football coach's salary seems to be the favorite target of many faculty members and nearby news media, I can understand the subterfuge. Congrats on the new hire and the guts to spend the money.

You’re right, bonus is not the right word. I know Bono had those built in too. For media appearances and other things. I thought this was pretty standard for most schools. I don’t know why they do it that way rather than just call it part of the salary because as you mentioned, it doesn’t appear to be tied to anything.
Overall, I’m pretty pleased with the compensation and buyout. I think our AD did a good job keeping things reasonable. Obviously, the Florida buyout probably helped keep that salary down.
