NCAA releases first week of the new NET rankings system
https://www.ncaa.com/rankings/basketball...t-rankings

Four SoCon teams make the top 100, and wofford barely out of the top 100 at 103. If anyone is unfamiliar with NET, its what is replacing RPI this year.

48 - Furman
70 - Samford
72 - UNCG
97 - ETSU
103 - Wofford

South carolina was 53rd so I think wofford just moved up in the top 100

1 Ohio St.
2 Virginia
3 Texas Tech
4 Michigan
5 Gonzaga
6 Duke
7 Michigan St.
8 Wisconsin
9 Virginia Tech
10 Loyola Marymount

Ohio State is the best team in the country? Kansas not in the top 10? Belmont is the #12 in the country?

At this point in the season, this new metric is useless.

Agreed.. they should have waited a few weeks to release the initial rankings. Honestly, I don't see why they dont just go with KenPom rankings and forget it

Yes, we all know it's pretty meaningless at this point (unless someone wants to hang a banner!!), but in case anyone wants to look under the hood just a bit, you catch watch this, pause the video as necessary, and see what it's all about:

NET algorithms

We are all the way up to #48 in the latest NET rankings, from 102. Furman is the only Socon team ahead of us at #45. Socon has 5 teams in the top 100.

Only slightly off-topic, Radford, just up the road, last night took down #17 Texas in Austin, adding that pelt to one from Notre Dame. Their only loss is to a good Duquesne team.

Today, UNCG is at UK, and Creighton gets their shot at the Zags in Omaha. Still can't believe we let them close us out on a 24-6 run.

Interestingly, UNCG plays Radford on 12/18

They just beat the worst team in the SoCon by 2 in double overtime. Congrats Furman!

4 SoCon teams in the top 100, with Citadel at 101 and Samford at 118. Incredible. I'll bet that's the highest Citadel has been 'ranked' in any basketball ranking system in a long, long time. By the way, as of now they're the #1 scoring team in the country.

Rodriguez has dropped to a respectable (lol) tie for 3rd in rebounding. #1 is our old nemesis Cacok from UNCW.

The bright side to this is if they win out up until our home game against them on the 29th, then we will get to beat a top 25 team in Freedom Hall.

Pull for Furman to win out, and for ETSU to beat them in the conference championship game.

Western Carolina is ranked 8th in the SoCon by Pomeroy and Massey and 9th by Sagarin, so not worst.

They suffered some blowout losses earlier in November but have been competitive more recently. In their last four games they lost to Southern Miss. by five points; beat Jacksonville by twelve; lead at Wake Forest with less than a minute to go before fading; and lost in double OT to Furman. In their second game of the season they only lost to Col. of Charleston by three.

Probably not a top half of the league challenger but overlook them at your peril. I suspect some of the younger Furman players did.
