It is not just the G5’s, a lot of P5s are under water also.

Most of the P5's who are underwater are there by choice. Meaning they spend what would be the profits, before the end of the fiscal year so they remain in the red, to keep up their subsidies. Now this isn't the case with every single one, name the smaller private schools, or individual years when investment to facilities have been made, or coaching changes, but by and large it is mostly the case among the P5's.

This years computer ratings tend to support that view. I don't know if its the graduation cycle but the MWC has all but caught the AAC in the computer rankings.

2018 Massey Composite Average

SEC 31.82
B12 47.18
B10 49.79
ACC 53.24
P12 54.40
AAC 75.74
MWC 77.83
SBC 85.99
MAC 89.66
CUSA 92.72

Notice also how head and shoulders the SEC is above everyone else this season, very top heavy.

SBC has moved in front of MAC/CUSA with only 10 programs in that conference.

I wonder if MVFC took a hit lately when they did not get many schools in the playoffs this year?

In my opinion all of FCS has taken a hit with all of the call ups this decade.

First the call up takes prospects that might have landed at an FCS school because its moved up.

Then it develops a walk on program, taking in guys would otherwise be in FCS.

12 programs moving from FCS to FBS has the recruiting impact of losing top 24 recruiting classes. Of course Idaho moved down to help strengthen the FCS out west.

You got to wonder why schools like Jacksonville State, James Madison, Villanova, North Dakota State, Eastern Washington and South Dakota State stay in FCS anymore? FCS have no competition anymore. It is more of a cake walk for them.

Academic reputation is not a deciding factor. ...

In other words, academic reputation is a hurdle (and how much of a hurdle it is varies by conference). But it is not a draw.

That's the draw. Getting a conference to agree on something is an exercise in herding cats. And the way to herd cats is to hold up a nice smelly piece of bologna. Then the cats will all come in your direction

LSU built dorms with a sloping roof with a nice courtyard between them as a dodge from state funding limits because LSU didn't have the private funds to build a stadium. Arkansas had added on to and expanded and renovated a stadium initially built by the Federal government as part of the WPA.

People on this board are under the delusion that money losing college football teams are some weird and strange new development. Profitable football is the weird and strange newcomer.

FSU built luxury boxes on top of several classroom and office buildings to get state funding for the expansion back in the 90's.

Unless your personal stench overwhelms the bologna. Look at Liberty.
