Miles to Kansas
And we couldn't go after him???????

Kansas has been a struggling program for quite some time now, but Im sure Miles will get paid more than he would have with us. Plus, with playing in the Big 12, he has a "chance" to get to the playoff but Kansas would have to repeat what UCF is doing for a few years before that would happen.

RE: Miles to Kansas
Miles is 65 years old with a 5 year contract. Louisiana is a football hotbed from which to recruit, however, those boys won’t be coming to Kansas. Miles will raise Kansas to a level of mediocrity but retire, or be fired, before the end of his contract. Then what? Right back where you started. Jayhawks should have gone for a younger coach.

Miles never wanted to coach in the MAC. He wouldn't consider WMU.

WOTS is that after Fleck left, Les Miles was in Kalamazoo to sign a contract to be the next coach and WMU athletics said no on fears he might leave in 2-3 years.

If that is true, then they are dumber than a box of rocks. So what if he would move on.

No joke here. I also know a few people who spotted him in downtown Kalamazoo in early January 2017. That was right in the middle of the coaching search. Seems like a pretty big coincidence. There were some internet postings about sightings as well.

I am going to be a bit of a Devil's advocate here and say you can't build a Boise State like we are all hoping for with a coach who leaves after a season or two. At best you have a successful MAC run for several seasons that peters out when you get far enough down the coaching tree as successful coaches leave (still preferable to me than being the Miami Dolphins of the MAC for 20 years, FWIW).

From reliable source I was told KB never considered or even talked to Old man Miles

Also from reliable sources - KB was told by his agent that he wouldn't consider WMU unless there was a plan in place to leave the MAC.

Similar to Cristobal, who didn't want to coach in this conference.

Miles will only take one job in Michigan, and it isn't us.

Thanks for confirming there were talks. And what is wrong with actually having some ambition to leave the MAC. Need more people around WMU athletics like that. Forward thinkers. It’s time for the happy to be here, collecting a paycheck to socialize crowd to move on. Need the same in DC with politicians!

And I think being realistic here -- it'd be joining the AAC (or MW if it was geographically closer) -- as only a temporary place for 3-5 years to leave anyway. WMU nor any other MAC team is in position to join the AAC until the B12 takes teams from the AAC, so that option was completely off the table even for Miles to use us as a temporary "career reboot". Only until the B12 DID take AAC teams would WMU even be a distant Option, let alone have an official plan set in at the time we needed a new HC + Miles was available right then.

To be more than a temporary place to stay -- it wouldn't be joining the AAC or MW as it's minimum -- it'd be joining the Big 12 (or the non-expanding B10 or ACC), which was and is 100% not an option.

Can't leave the MAC unless another conference invites us, and I'm sure he knew that full well.

CUSA and Sun Belt would obviously be lateral moves at best. And we are nowhere near the AAC's radar. Forget about P5s.

Independence would be a disaster (see NIU).

RE: Miles to Kansas
Miles wouldn't sign with Kathy because he wanted 3x the budget she had for assistant coaches. Les wasn't going to bring in D2 and lower G5 assistant coaches. If he would have been successful in 2017 at WMU he would be already gone but would have raised the salary threshold well beyond MAC standards. Many complain about paying Lester 800k? WMU would have been stuck with $1m+ head coach slot and assistants making 3x their MAC counterparts.

You can't bring in SEC level coaching for short duration in the MAC. Remember WMU pays Lester 350K, 450K is third party source. That dries up and the party is over.

Not taking sides here when it comes to the coaches. But the difference is that Miles already has a gaudy resume that commands that sort of premium salary, whereas Lester did not.
