Ah, thanks for the clarification.
They play under the ACHA as opposed to NCAA. There is quite the talent gap between the two. The very best Div. 1 ACHA teams can be somewhat competitive with Div. 3 NCAA.
Penn State and Arizona State are the only two ACHA schools that made the jump to NCAA.
One advantage of ACHA is that there is no Title IX compliance.
If you have dreams to play in the NHL, NCAA is of course the way to go. Only one ACHA player has ever been drafted by the NHL (5th round at #140) in 2014 and he currently plays in the AHL.
What is going to help the ACHA is the limited number of NCAA teams (60 in Div. 1 and 74 in Div. 3). There are nearly 400 ACHA teams in three divisions. Hockey is growing and not everyone can play in the NCAA. So players that are just under the radar (sound familiar fellow Huskie fans?) and wish to continue their playing career have the ACHA as an option.
If I remember correctly, scholarships are not offered to ACHA or Div. 3 NCAA players.
Oh, one more thing...ACHA teams really, really, REALLY HATE being referred to as "club teams".
Hope to someday see NIU make it to NCAA status. I envy Miami, BG and WMU.
