It is our turn
I’m watching this basketball deal on ESPN. It’s great. They slob on Providence and Pitino. They floss over UNLV. They give due respect to Jordan, Magic and Duke. I haven’t seen it all. Georgetown got theirs. Villanova has struck gold three times. Our old nemesis Louisville has multiple titles. We were agonizing close in San Antonio. Cal got his after he left us. It is our turn. I will never forget how I felt leaving the Alamodome Monday night in 1998. It is our turn and I want to see it finally happen for our city. Let’s do this thing.

RE: It is our turn
I understand your feelings, we are due the mix of good luck that goes with a championship run. We've just got to have a team that wants it as badly and gets the job done on the court to go along with that luck.
But wasn't it 2008?

Imma do y'all a favor.... here goes...
(Clears throat) I predict Memphis will win a national championship in football before we win a National Championship in basketball.

I'm not saying we don't get to final fours. I predict Penny will be wildly successful here.

So you’re saying we’ll never win a national championship in basketball?

I say we win a National Championship in basketball within the next 5 years. Penny is just the coach to do it.

That is the only conclusion to be drawn from his statement

Of course we're talking about a "college sports fan" who didn't even know where the Independence Bowl was played.

It's your prediction, and you're entitled to it - bless your heart....
I feel that just the opposite will happen, we win one in basketball before we do in football. The game is stacked against us in football and will be as long as the inequities exist between the P6 and the rest of us remains. Even if by some miracle in the future we have a level playing field, they have such a head start on us.

This guy gets it...
I will add... I'm only playing half anti-jinx. I have a caveat. I BELIEVE.... that the playoff will expand to 8 and the G5 will get an auto-bid to it. The question is, how soon will that happen.
The other thing is, I believe *IF* we get a $10MM+ per team/per year deal in these coming negotiations, within 3 or 4 years the AAC will be seen as close enough to be considered for a playoff spot even if they don't go to 8. Of course, it would take a special year, and some special circumstances (like playing more than one P5 opponent OOC), but that's what I'm semi-banking on.
So it comes down to this. If we are able to keep Norvell and get some decent improvement on the defense side of coaching, we can return to the level of play from the last four years. I can see us, given the possibilities listed above, able to challenge for the title in roughly 6 or 7 years. Penny? Sure, he could win it all this year, or it could take him as long as it took Calipari to reach the Title Game, which if memory serves, was 8 years.
That's the thing about predictions. I can't prove I'm right, and you can't prove I'm wrong.

Nor will I. Heart broken, kick in the gut feeling, and just plain pizzed off. Instead of cabbing it back to the hotel, I walked the entire way back (7-8miles) trying to figure out how in the hell we blew a 9 point lead with 2 minutes left in the game. I cussed Chalmers (lucky b@st@rd), cussed Calipari (timeout maybe?), and make just one d@mn free throw. Still get that kick in the gut feeling every time I think about it........If not mistaken, the year was 2008.
